Chapter 10 - THE CALLER STEPS OUT“YOU SAVED ME THAT NIGHT. NOW TELL ME WHY YOU’VE BEEN FOLLOWING ME.”
Emily held the recorder against her chest as a man stepped into the emergency light. He was in his late fifties, gray-haired, carrying no visible weapon.
“My name is Thomas Reed,” he said. “I worked with your mother.”
Daniel immediately recognized him.
Reed had once been a federal investigator assigned to financial crimes involving the Hale family. Official records claimed he retired seventeen years earlier.
He hadn’t.
Reed explained that Anna had survived Blackwater House. For years, they secretly collected evidence against Shepherd. But six years earlier, Anna disappeared again.
This time Reed found blood.
No body.
“She made me promise to watch you from a distance,” Reed told Emily. “That’s why I knew about the necklace.”
Emily’s anger exploded. “You watched me bury her!”
“I watched you bury a coffin I knew might be empty.”
Daniel grabbed Reed by the jacket.
“You should have told her!”
Reed did not resist.
“If Shepherd knew Emily understood the truth, she would have become the next target.”
Suddenly Reed’s phone vibrated.
A security alert appeared.
Someone had entered the storage facility.
Reed looked at the camera feed.
