Chapter 3 - THE MAN AT THE DINNER TABLE “IF YOU’RE MY FATHER, WHY DID YOU LET ME GROW UP THINKING YOU WERE DEAD?”

Emily’s question echoed through the cellar. Daniel looked older than he had at the dinner table. The powerful politician disappeared for a moment, leaving only a man carrying eighteen years of regret. “Because your mother believed disappearing was the only way to keep you alive.”
Daniel explained that Anna had uncovered evidence proving Richard’s father and several wealthy associates had stolen millions from charitable foundations. Daniel had secretly helped her gather evidence. But before they could expose the operation, someone discovered what they were doing. Anna fled the mansion while pregnant and cut contact with everyone connected to the Hale family.
“She told me you died shortly after birth,” Daniel said. Emily shook her head. “My mother told me my father died before I was born.” Both had been lied to. The question was no longer whether Anna had hidden the truth. The question was why she had believed those lies were necessary.
The cellar door suddenly opened. Richard entered with two security guards. “Step away from her, Senator.” Daniel positioned himself between Emily and the men. Richard laughed bitterly. “You still think this is about old financial records? My father has been dead for nine years. Those crimes can’t hurt him anymore.”
“Then why are you afraid?” Emily asked. Richard’s smile vanished. She removed the photograph and held it up. “What was my mother looking for?” Richard stared at the writing on its back. For the first time that night, genuine fear crossed his face. Daniel noticed it too.
Richard ordered the guards to take Emily’s phone. Neither man moved. Guests had begun gathering at the cellar entrance behind him. Several had followed after hearing the shouting. Margaret stood among them. She looked directly at the guards. “Anyone who touches that young woman will answer to me.”
Richard turned on his mother. “You don’t understand what she has!” Margaret’s expression hardened. “Then tell us.” Cornered by witnesses, Richard finally revealed the truth. Anna hadn’t merely discovered evidence of financial fraud. She had recorded conversations proving the scheme continued long after Richard’s father died.
And Richard had taken control of it.

Emily’s phone vibrated again. The mysterious caller sent another message: THE RECORDING ISN’T IN THE HOUSE. CHECK YOUR NECKLACE. Emily stared down at the silver pendant beneath her blouse. Richard saw her expression. His face changed instantly.
“Take that necklace from her!”
