Chapter 12 - ANNA’S FINAL DOOR“THEN WHO HOLDS THE TITLE NOW?”
Emily’s question followed them to a secure federal safe house Reed had kept secret for years. Richard sat handcuffed to a table while Daniel guarded the door.
Richard finally explained that Shepherd was the name given to whoever controlled the financial network. Richard’s father had served under one Shepherd. After that leader died, someone else inherited the title.
Anna had discovered the successor’s identity.
That was why she disappeared.
Reed recovered the storage archive before firefighters destroyed the building. Among the surviving files was Anna’s journal.
The final page contained coordinates.
At sunrise, Emily, Daniel, Reed, and federal agents followed them to a remote cabin beside a frozen lake. Richard remained in custody.
The cabin appeared abandoned.
Emily entered first.
On a wooden table stood a photograph of herself taken only two days earlier.
Beside it was a cup of coffee.
Still warm.
“Someone was just here,” Reed whispered.
Emily noticed a red door at the back of the cabin.
Her mother’s symbol.
She opened it.
Behind the door was a small room filled with surveillance monitors.
Every screen showed people connected to the Hale investigation.
One showed Richard.
Another showed Margaret.
Another showed Daniel.
The final monitor showed Emily herself standing inside the cabin.
Live.
Then the speakers crackled.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
“Emily?”
Her heart stopped.
She knew that voice.
“Mom?”
Daniel rushed forward.
The monitors suddenly went dark.
But one final sentence appeared across the center screen:
SHEPHERD KNOWS YOU FOUND ME. DO NOT TRUST ANYONE WHO CAME WITH YOU.
Emily slowly turned around.
Daniel stood behind her.
Reed stood beside him.
Three federal agents blocked the doorway.
And one of them quietly reached beneath his coat.
