Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Morning

Evening settled over Long Island like a blanket of crushed navy velvet.

The stars emerged one by one across the vast, unbroken sky, mirroring the twin red marks on the little girls’ wrists.

Inside the nursery, the soft glow of a star-shaped nightlight illuminated the twin beds.

Clara sat between them, tucking the soft down comforters under their chins, smoothing their matching chestnut curls.

Lily looked up, her big hazel eyes filled with unshakeable peace:

“Mommy? Will you sing the song?”

Clara smiled—a radiant, beautiful, sovereign smile that wiped away every dark night, every cold raindrop, and every tear of the past four years.

She took their small hands into hers, closing her eyes as her voice filled the warm room with the melody that had guided her daughter home:

“Golden star… near and far…

Guiding light through the dark…

No more tears, no more pain…

Love has brought you home again.”

Emma’s breathing slowed into peaceful slumber.

Lily squeezed Clara’s thumb once, whispered, “Goodnight, Mommy,” and drifted off into the deep, safe sleep of a child who knew she was loved.

Ethan stepped into the doorway, leaning against the frame, watching his wife and daughters with an unyielding, sacred reverence.

Clara stood up, walking to him, slipping her hand into his calloused palm.

The rain was gone.

The stolen room was reclaimed.

The thief was bound in federal iron.

And standing together beneath the vast, starlit heavens, the father, the mother, and their twin daughters stood in the warmth of the light—unbroken, triumphant, and forever sovereign.
