Chapter 4 - The Arrival of Arthur Kensington

The street fell into an eerie, absolute silence, broken only by the rhythmic thumping of the rain and the idling of the armored Suburbans.
Stepping out of the lead vehicle was Arthur Kensington.
At seventy-four years old, Arthur Kensington walked with the terrifying, razor-sharp precision of an apex courtroom predator. He wore an immaculate bespoke charcoal three-piece suit cut from Savile Row wool, an unbuttoned dark overcoat, his silver hair brushed back, carrying an eight-inch-thick, red-wax-sealed federal portfolio.
Beside him walked State Police Detective Inspector Marcus Cole and two federal marshals.
Arthur walked directly to where Victoria Sterling was cowering against the glass window of the boutique.
He adjusted his gold-rimmed reading glasses with clinical, surgical frost:
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Sterling,” Arthur spoke, each syllable carrying the finality of a guillotine blade dropping in an empty courtyard.
Arthur unclasped the red-wax-sealed portfolio, presenting an illuminated digital tablet to the crowd:
“Exhibit Alpha: The certified DNA match processed twenty minutes ago from the neonatal registry archives of St. Jude’s Women’s Pavilion.”
Arthur tapped the screen:
“The child known as ‘Charlotte Sterling’ shares ninety-nine point nine nine percent genetic markers with Clara Vance and Ethan Vance. She is Lily Vance. Biological twin sister to Emma Vance.”
The crowd gasped. Several onlookers began recording on their smartphones, broadcasting the socialite’s public unmasking across global live streams.
Arthur turned to page fourteen:
“Exhibit Beta: The encrypted financial records of Dr. Marcus Cole.”
Arthur’s voice rang across Fifth Avenue like an artillery salvo:
“Four years ago, on the night of October twelfth, three point five million dollars was wired from Victoria Sterling’s private trust account to an offshore entity in Belize. The memo on the transfer: ‘Room 204 Special Services.’”
Victoria’s breath seized in her windpipe.
The color drained from her skin in a sickening, concussive wave, leaving her looking hollow, bloated, and ancient:
“No… no, that was a medical research donation! Dr. Cole was my obstetrician!”

“Dr. Cole was arrested at JFK International Airport forty minutes ago, Victoria,” Arthur Kensington replied with quiet cruelty.
“He has already signed a full confession under federal immunity.”
