Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT SHADOWS The Blackwood mansion was eventually sold.

A nonprofit purchased it.

The marble foyer remained.

But everything else changed.

The hidden rooms became counseling offices.

The surveillance room became a training center.

The nursery became a child-safety clinic.

The building received a new name:

THE OPEN DOOR CENTER.

Not Blackwood.

Not Victor.

Not Serena.

Just Open Door.

Lily returned during construction.

She stood in the foyer where Serena had kicked her.

It looked ordinary now.

That surprised her.

Trauma had taught her that certain places should announce themselves.

They rarely did.

Then she heard laughter.

Ethan came running through the foyer.

Older.

Stronger.

Happy.

His arm had healed.

He remembered very little of that night.

Only fragments.

A marble floor.

A woman's voice.

Lily's face.

Isabella followed him.

“Slow down!”

Ethan laughed.

Lily smiled.

The mansion no longer belonged to Serena.

Years later, Lily graduated from college.

Her mother was there.

Isabella was there.

Ethan carried flowers.

Victor received a photograph from prison.

He wrote back:

You built something no money could have purchased.

Lily smiled.

Years later, she visited Victor.

He looked smaller.

Older.

Ethan's drawing sat on the table.

A house.

Three people inside.

One person outside.

Victor stared at it.

“He put me outside.”

Lily nodded.

“That is where you are.”

Victor looked at the drawing again.

“At least I'm in the picture.”

Lily smiled sadly.

“You're his father.”

Victor waited.

“That doesn't automatically make you safe.”

He nodded.

May you like

“I know.”

That was progress.
