Lily stood beside it.

Dosages.

Then she saw one handwritten instruction.

Victor stared at the page.
“Why?”
Lily swallowed.
“Because Ethan cried more when she watched him.”
Victor closed his eyes.

Then Marco discovered a behavioral report describing Ethan as aggressive and emotionally disturbed.
Lily stared at it.
“He's fourteen months old.”
Victor's face hardened.
The report recommended that Ethan be transferred to a private residential facility after Victor and Serena's wedding.
“Why would they send a baby away?”
Lily answered quietly.
“To remove him from the house.”
She looked at Victor.
“And from you.”
The next file was worse.
Financial records showed Serena had been paying Mrs. Vale forty thousand dollars every month.
The money came through a nonprofit partially funded by Blackwood charitable donations.
Victor realized something horrifying.
He had unknowingly financed the system that was destroying his own family.
Then Marco opened another file.
Lily Carter.
Her address.
Her mother's medical records.
Her debts.
Her employment history.
A psychological assessment.

Lily felt sick.
“They investigated me.”
Victor stared at the page.

Establish Serena as household authority.

Victor stopped reading.
The family trust was worth billions.
Then Marco found something labeled:

Travel accident.
Medical incapacity.
Federal detention.
Victor's blood ran cold.
“She wasn't planning to marry me,” he whispered.
Lily looked at him.
“She was planning for something to happen to you.”
Marco opened one final file.
A photograph.
Serena stood inside an abandoned facility near Lake Geneva.
Beside her was a terrified woman tied to a chair.
Victor recognized her immediately.
“Maya Torres.”
Ethan's former pediatric nurse.
The woman who had disappeared months earlier.
Then Victor saw something in the corner of the photograph.

Victor stared.
“What mother?”

Until a technician recovered an audio file.
A woman's trembling voice filled the room.

Victor stopped breathing.

The woman he had mourned for years.
