Chapter 11 - THE FIRE Hale refused to surrender.
He triggered the archive's emergency protocol.
Alarms screamed.
The complex began locking down.
Then smoke filled the corridor.
"Hale is burning it," Reed shouted.
The archive was designed to destroy itself if compromised.
Flames climbed the walls.
Julian carried Lilly.
Emily held Nora.
They ran.
Behind them, decades of secrets burned.
But Hale escaped.
Victoria followed him.
Julian thought she had betrayed them again.
Then he saw her stop.
She looked back.
And threw Hale's final access card into the fire.
Hale screamed.
"You stupid woman!"
Victoria smiled through tears.
"Maybe."
Then she disappeared into the flames.
Julian pulled Emily toward the exit.
They escaped seconds before the underground complex collapsed.
Outside, dawn was breaking.
For the first time in years, Emily stood beneath an open sky.
Lilly stared at her.
"Mommy?"
Emily dropped to her knees.
Lilly ran into her arms.
Julian watched them embrace.
Nora stood nearby.
Emily opened one arm.
"Nora."
The girl hesitated.
Then ran forward.
The family held each other.
Julian finally allowed himself to cry.
