Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO SAVED HALE Richard Hale was captured three months later.
At least, that was what the news reported.
But Julian immediately noticed something wrong.
Hale had been found in a private clinic.
Alive.
Unharmed.
And the man who had supposedly rescued him was a federal investigator named Daniel Cross.
Julian stared at the photograph.
Daniel Cross.
Samuel Cross's brother.
The same family that had been protecting Eclipse survivors.
Julian called Samuel.
"Who is Daniel?"
Silence.
Then Samuel said:
"Stay away from him."
Julian's blood chilled.
"Why?"
"Because Daniel was never part of the protection network."
"What is he?"
Samuel answered:
"The architect."
Julian understood.
Hale had never been the mastermind.
He had been the public face.
Daniel had designed the system.
Daniel had manipulated Victoria.
Daniel had controlled the disappearances.
And Daniel had allowed Hale to take the blame.
Julian returned home.
Emily was cooking dinner.
Lilly and Nora were laughing in the kitchen.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Then the lights flickered.
A black envelope appeared beneath the front door.
Julian picked it up.
Inside was a photograph of his family.
Taken that afternoon.
From outside their house.
