Chapter 8 - THE GHOST IN THE WIRES

"Who is sending these messages?" the dark-haired woman whispered intensely, pressing her ear against the cold plaster wall. Above them, the heavy, methodical footsteps began to pace the second-floor landing. The sender knew the house's layout, the intruder's movements, and the fiancée’s vile betrayal. Every dark reflection looked like a man holding a gun. Just as they crept toward the garage access door, a voice crackled from the house’s smart-speaker system. It wasn't the friendly digital assistant.
"I know all about the servant stairs, Richard," a deep, distorted voice echoed through the surrounding speakers. The sound was metallic, dripping with extremely dark amusement. "Your new security team is currently asleep in their van. You are completely alone. Bring me the boy, and I will let the nanny walk away. You have exactly sixty seconds left."
