Chapter 1 - THE FALL “DAD! DON’T TOUCH HER!”

The scream came from somewhere behind him.
But Daniel Mercer barely heard it.
All he heard was the sickening sound of a body hitting polished marble.
Three seconds earlier, he had been standing near the enormous windows of his Malibu estate, staring at the blue glow of the swimming pool outside and wondering why his daughter had suddenly stopped answering his questions.
Then something moved above him.
A shadow.
A desperate gasp.
And a woman came tumbling down the floating glass staircase.
“NO!”
Daniel lunged forward.
He was too late.
Elena Ruiz, the woman who had worked in his home for nearly four years, struck the floor and curled instinctively onto her side.
Her black-and-white housekeeper’s uniform twisted beneath her.
Her eyes squeezed shut.
For one terrifying second, she didn’t move.
“Elena!”
Daniel dropped to his knees beside her.
His hands shook as he reached toward her shoulder.
“Elena, can you hear me?”
A faint breath escaped her lips.
Then—
“Daniel!”
His fiancée’s voice cut through the room.
Vanessa Hale rushed down the staircase, one hand gripping the glass railing.
She wore the silver dress she had chosen for their engagement dinner, and under any other circumstances she would have looked breathtaking.
Tonight, Daniel barely saw her.
“What happened?” he demanded.
Vanessa froze halfway down the stairs.
“I—I don’t know.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You were upstairs.”
“I heard something.”
“You were standing right there!”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Daniel noticed.
“She slipped.”
Daniel looked down at Elena.
Blood darkened a strand of hair near her temple.
“She slipped?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa came down another step.
“She was carrying laundry. I told her to be careful. She must have lost her balance.”
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
There was no laundry.
No basket.
No towels.
Nothing.
His stomach tightened.
“Elena?”
Her eyelids fluttered.
“Mr. Mercer…”
“I’m here.”
She tried to move.
Pain crossed her face.
“Don’t move,” Daniel said quickly. “An ambulance is coming.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Daniel, she probably just needs—”
“Stay back.”
The words came out harder than he intended.
Vanessa stopped.
“What?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I said stay back.”
Her face hardened.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then another voice came from behind them.
“Daddy.”
Daniel turned.
His nine-year-old daughter, Lily, stood near the entrance to the kitchen.
Barefoot.
Pink T-shirt.
Jeans.
Her brown hair fell around a face that had gone frighteningly pale.
And she was holding a phone.
“Lily?”
The girl didn’t move.
Daniel immediately softened his voice.
“Honey, go upstairs.”
“No.”
“Lily.”
“You need to see this.”
Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward the phone.
That reaction was small.
But Daniel saw it.
And suddenly the entire room felt different.
“See what?”
Lily swallowed.
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
“The reason Elena fell.”
Silence.
Daniel stared at his daughter.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Sweetheart, you’re frightened. You probably misunderstood what you saw.”
“I didn’t misunderstand.”
“Lily—”
“Stop talking to her.”
Daniel’s voice made Vanessa turn.
He stood slowly.
“What is she talking about?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I have absolutely no idea.”
Lily walked forward.
One step.
Then another.
She extended the phone.
“Dad.”
Her voice trembled.
“I recorded it.”
Daniel felt something cold move through his chest.
“Recorded what?”
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
And for the first time since Daniel had known his daughter, he saw genuine fear in her eyes when she looked at the woman he planned to marry.
“Everything.”
Vanessa’s face went white.
Daniel took the phone.
Before he could press play, Elena suddenly grabbed his wrist.
Her grip was weak.
But desperate.
“Mr. Mercer…”
Daniel bent down.
“What?”
Elena’s eyes opened.
She wasn’t looking at him.
She was looking at Vanessa.
“Don’t…”
Her voice cracked.
“Don’t let her get the phone.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“That’s ridiculous.”
Elena tried to speak again.
“Your daughter…”
Then her eyes closed.
“Elena!”
Daniel caught her shoulders.
She was breathing.
Barely.
Sirens sounded outside.
Within seconds, red emergency lights flashed through the mansion’s enormous windows.
Daniel remained on the floor beside Elena until paramedics rushed inside.
They stabilized her neck, checked her breathing, and carefully transferred her onto a stretcher.
Daniel watched every movement.
Vanessa stood several feet away.
Lily stayed behind her father.
As the paramedics carried Elena toward the front door, one of them asked, “How far did she fall?”
Daniel opened his mouth.
Vanessa answered first.
“She slipped from the upper landing.”
The paramedic nodded.
Daniel didn’t.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at the phone in his hand.
“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered, “whatever Lily recorded, remember she’s a child. Children misinterpret things.”
Lily stepped forward.
“I know what I saw.”
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“You should be in bed.”
Daniel moved between them.
“Enough.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You’re taking her side?”
“My daughter doesn’t have a side.”
“Apparently she does.”
Daniel looked down at the phone.
His thumb hovered over the screen.
Vanessa moved closer.
“Daniel, please. We’ve had a difficult night. Elena is injured. Lily is upset. Maybe we should wait until everyone calms down.”
“Why?”
“What?”
“Why should I wait?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel unlocked the phone.
The video began.
At first, the image shook.
Lily had apparently been filming from behind the upstairs hallway.
Daniel saw Elena near the staircase.
Vanessa stood in front of her.
There was no laundry.
No basket.
They were arguing.
The audio was faint.
Daniel raised the volume.
Elena’s voice came through.
“I’m telling him tonight.”
Vanessa answered.
“You’re not telling him anything.”
“I won’t keep lying for you.”
Daniel’s breathing slowed.
Onscreen, Vanessa stepped closer.
“You signed an agreement.”
“I signed a confidentiality agreement about your business affairs. Not about Lily.”
Daniel looked up.
Vanessa had stopped breathing.
“What does she mean?”
“Daniel—”
He lifted one hand.
“Don’t.”
He continued watching.
Elena backed toward the stairs.
“You stay away from that child.”
Vanessa’s voice became colder.
“She isn’t your child.”
“No.”
Elena looked directly at her.
“But apparently I’m the only person in this house protecting her.”
Daniel felt Lily’s hand slip into his.
He squeezed it.
The video continued.
Vanessa moved toward Elena.
Elena raised her hands.
Then Lily’s camera jerked.
There was shouting.
A struggle.
And Elena disappeared over the edge.
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
Nobody spoke.
Outside, the ambulance pulled away.
Vanessa finally whispered, “It wasn’t what it looked like.”
Daniel raised his eyes.
His expression had changed completely.
“What happened to my daughter?”
Vanessa blinked.
“Nothing.”
“Elena said she was protecting Lily.”
“She was trying to manipulate you.”
“From what?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel turned toward Lily.
His daughter was crying silently.
“Honey.”
He knelt.
“You can tell me anything.”
Lily looked at Vanessa.
Then back at him.
“She told me you would send me away.”
Daniel’s face drained of color.
“What?”
“If I told you.”
“Told me what?”
Lily’s lower lip trembled.
“That Mommy’s accident wasn’t an accident.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
His wife had died three years earlier.
A car crash.
A rain-soaked canyon road.
Police had ruled it accidental.
Vanessa had entered his life eleven months later.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Perfectly.
Daniel looked at the woman he had intended to marry in six weeks.
Vanessa shook her head.
“She’s confused.”
Lily suddenly shouted.
“I HEARD YOU!”
Daniel turned back to his daughter.
“Heard what?”
Lily wiped tears from her cheeks.
“Vanessa was talking to somebody in your office.”
“When?”
“Last week.”
“What did she say?”
Lily looked down.
“She said…”
Her voice became almost inaudible.
“She said Mom should have died the first time.”
The mansion went silent.
Daniel felt as if the marble beneath him had disappeared.
He slowly looked toward Vanessa.
She wasn’t frightened anymore.
That was what terrified him.
The nervous fiancée was gone.
The woman staring back at him was strangely calm.
Almost relieved.
Daniel rose.
“Who were you talking to?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“WHO?”
Her eyes moved toward the phone.
Then toward the front door.
Daniel understood.
He stepped between her and the exit.
“You’re not leaving.”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“You still don’t understand what’s happening.”
“Then explain it.”
She looked at Lily.
And Daniel saw something in her expression that made every protective instinct inside him ignite.
He immediately moved his daughter behind him.
Vanessa whispered:
“Elena wasn’t supposed to fall tonight.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
“She was supposed to disappear tomorrow.”
And somewhere upstairs—
a door quietly closed.
Daniel heard it.
So did Lily.
So did Vanessa.
Three people stood frozen beneath the staircase.
Daniel slowly looked upward.
May you like
They weren’t alone.
Someone else was inside the house.
