Chapter 9 - THE NAME ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE Daniel stared at Jonathan Cross.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Daniel laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the alternative was hitting him.

“That’s your move?”

Cross remained calm.

“You think I’m lying.”

“I know you are.”

“Ask Mateo.”

Daniel looked at him.

Mateo said nothing.

That silence was worse than any answer.

“Mateo.”

“I don’t know the whole story.”

“Do you know enough?”

Mateo looked toward Lily.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Look at me.”

Mateo did.

“Sarah found a sealed medical file.”

“What file?”

“Lily’s.”

Daniel’s breathing slowed.

Cross continued.

“She discovered records had been altered.”

Daniel turned on him.

“Shut up.”

Lily’s voice came quietly.

“Dad, what does he mean?”

“Nothing.”

Cross smiled.

“Children always deserve the truth, don’t they?”

Daniel lunged.

Mateo caught him.

“Daniel!”

Cross’s men raised their weapons.

Lily screamed.

Daniel stopped.

Cross adjusted his coat.

“Give me the ledger.”

“No.”

“Then perhaps Lily should hear everything.”

Daniel stared.

Cross continued.

“Sarah was pregnant before she married you.”

“That’s a lie.”

“Check the dates.”

“I was there when Lily was born.”

“I didn’t say she wasn’t Sarah’s daughter.”

Daniel’s face went cold.

Cross smiled.

“I said she may not be yours.”

Lily began crying.

Daniel immediately turned.

He crouched in front of her.

“Look at me.”

She couldn’t.

“Lily.”

Finally she did.

“You are my daughter.”

“But—”

“No.”

Daniel took her face gently between his hands.

“I don’t care what any paper says. I don’t care what anybody says. You are my daughter.”

Her tears fell.

“Really?”

“Forever.”

Cross watched.

Something in his expression almost resembled disappointment.

Daniel stood.

“You don’t get to use her against me.”

Cross’s smile disappeared.

“Ledger.”

“No.”

A gunshot shattered the window.

Everyone dropped.

Police lights erupted outside.

Cross cursed.

Detective Sloan’s voice came through a loudspeaker.

“FEDERAL AND LOCAL TASK FORCE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

Cross looked stunned.

Mateo laughed.

“You really thought she wouldn’t track Daniel?”

Cross grabbed Lily.

Daniel moved instantly.

Cross raised his weapon.

“STOP!”

Daniel froze.

Lily screamed.

Cross dragged her toward the door.

“You follow me, she dies.”

Daniel’s entire world narrowed.

“Let her go.”

“Ledger.”

Daniel took it from Lily’s dropped jacket.

He held it up.

“Here.”

“Slide it.”

Daniel looked at Mateo.

Mateo subtly shook his head.

Daniel ignored him.

He slid the ledger across the floor.

Cross released Lily for half a second to reach down.

That was enough.

Lily ran.

Daniel charged.

Cross fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Daniel hit him.

Both men crashed through a glass table.

Cross punched Daniel.

Daniel barely felt it.

Years of grief exploded through him.

Sarah.

Lily.

Elena.

Every lie.

Every funeral.

Every night he blamed himself.

He hit Cross again.

Then Sloan entered.

“DANIEL! MOVE!”

He rolled away.

Cross reached for his weapon.

Sloan fired.

The bullet struck Cross’s shoulder.

He collapsed.

Officers flooded the house.

Daniel ran to Lily.

She wrapped herself around him.

“I thought he was going to—”

“He didn’t.”

Daniel held her.

“He didn’t.”

Across the room, Mateo recovered the ledger.

Sloan cuffed Cross.

Cross laughed through the pain.

“You think this ends with me?”

Sloan tightened the cuffs.

“It ends with you in a hospital under armed guard.”

Cross looked at Daniel.

“Ask Sarah’s doctor.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Cross smiled.

“Ask who changed Lily’s records.”

Then officers carried him away.

The next morning, Daniel sat in a hospital conference room with Detective Sloan and Mateo.

Lily slept nearby under Elena’s watch.

Elena had arrived before dawn.

When Mateo walked into the room, brother and sister had stared at each other for ten full seconds.

Then Elena slapped him.

Then hugged him so tightly both collapsed crying.

Daniel gave them privacy.

Now there was one final question.

Lily’s birth records.

Sloan placed a file on the table.

“We found the original.”

Daniel didn’t touch it.

“Tell me.”

“Sarah’s records were altered.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Father?”

Sloan hesitated.

“Daniel—”

“Just tell me.”

She slid the page forward.

Daniel looked.

The biological father’s name was blank.

“What does that mean?”

“The original clinic used donor material during fertility treatment.”

Daniel stared.

“We never had fertility treatment.”

Sloan frowned.

“What?”

“Sarah became pregnant naturally.”

Mateo leaned forward.

“Then these records are fake too.”

Sloan looked at him.

Daniel understood.

Cross had manipulated them again.

“Why?”

Mateo answered.

“To destabilize you.”

Daniel stared at the document.

Then laughed quietly.

“Of course.”

Sloan nodded.

“DNA test will settle it.”

Daniel looked toward the room where Lily slept.

“No.”

Sloan frowned.

“You don’t want to know?”

“I already know.”

“Daniel—”

“She’s my daughter.”

He pushed the file away.

“That’s enough.”

Three weeks later, Jonathan Cross was indicted on federal conspiracy, obstruction, extortion, and attempted kidnapping charges.

Thomas Reed remained missing.

The Mercer ledger triggered investigations across four states.

Judges resigned.

Executives disappeared from boardrooms.

Old cases reopened.

For the first time in decades, the network began collapsing.

Daniel sold Mercer Development.

Not because the company was worthless.

Because he wanted no empire built on fear.

He placed much of the proceeds into a trust for victims of the fraud.

Elena and Mateo began rebuilding their relationship.

Lily returned to school.

Slowly, the Mercer house became a home again.

Then one afternoon, Daniel received a package.

No return address.

Inside was a DNA report.

He stared at it.

He had never requested one.

Someone else had.

Daniel opened the envelope.

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 0.00%.

He stopped breathing.

Below the result was another name.

Not Thomas Reed.

Not Michael.

Not Jonathan Cross.

A name Daniel knew.

A man who had supposedly died ten years earlier.

CHARLES MERCER.

Daniel’s father.

He dropped the report.

“No.”

Impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

Then he noticed handwriting at the bottom.

Sarah’s handwriting.

Three words.

Daniel, forgive me.

Daniel stared at the page.

And somewhere behind him, Lily entered the room.

“Dad?”

Daniel turned quickly, hiding the report.

She smiled.

“Are you okay?”

He looked at the child he had raised since birth.

The child he had carried through fevers.

The child whose first word had been “Daddy.”

Whatever that document meant, it could never change that.

Daniel smiled.

“Yeah.”

But after Lily left, he looked again at the report.

Charles Mercer.

His father.

If it was genuine, the truth was far darker than Cross’s lie.

Daniel picked up his phone.

There was only one person who might know.

Thomas Reed.

The missing man.

Daniel dialed an old number Reed had once told him never to use.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then someone answered.

Daniel whispered:

“Tell me what my father did.”

A long silence followed.

Then Reed replied:

“Daniel… Charles Mercer wasn’t your father.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

May you like

And Reed added:

“He was Sarah’s.”
