Chapter 4 - THE EIGHTY-MILLION-DOLLAR LIE By sunrise, Daniel was no longer simply the grieving husband whose wife had been murdered.

He was a suspect.
Detective Sloan sat across from him inside an interview room.
“Eighty-two million dollars.”
Daniel stared at the documents.
“I’ve never seen these accounts.”
“They’re registered under your identity.”
“Then they’re fake.”
“The signatures match yours.”
“They were forged.”
“Can you prove that?”
Daniel looked through the glass.
Lily was outside with a victim advocate.
He felt exhausted.
“I spent three years blaming myself for Sarah’s death. Last night I learned my brother caused it. My fiancée assaulted the woman who tried to protect my daughter. And now you think I stole eighty million dollars?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.”
Sloan leaned back.
“Daniel, somebody built a financial trail leading directly to you.”
“Michael.”
“Probably.”
“Probably?”
“There’s a problem.”
She placed another document on the table.
“These transfers continued after Michael was arrested last night.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
“At 2:13 this morning, four million dollars moved from one offshore account to another.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Then Michael wasn’t working alone.”
“No.”
The interview-room door opened.
An officer entered.
“Elena Ruiz is asking for him.”
At the hospital, Elena looked stronger.
Daniel sat beside her.
“You knew about the money?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Sarah asked me not to.”
Daniel stared.
“You knew Sarah?”
Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Long before I worked for you.”
The truth unfolded slowly.
Sarah had discovered irregularities inside Mercer Development four years earlier.
She had secretly hired an investigator.
That investigator was Elena’s older brother, Mateo.
He disappeared six months before Sarah died.
Police believed he had left the country.
Elena never believed it.
“So you came into my house looking for answers.”
“Yes.”
“Everything was a lie?”
“My employment application was.”
Daniel looked away.
“But caring for Lily wasn’t.”
He looked back.
Elena had tears in her eyes.
“That child became family to me.”
Daniel believed her.
Perhaps because after everything else had collapsed, Elena was the only person whose actions had consistently matched her words.
“What did Sarah discover?”
“A network.”
“What kind?”
“Shell companies. Fake contractors. Properties purchased under stolen identities.”
“Michael?”
“He was part of it.”
“Who else?”
Elena hesitated.
“Your father.”
Daniel went still.
“My father has been dead for seven years.”
“I know.”
Daniel stared at her.
Elena reached toward the bedside drawer.
“There’s something Sarah left behind.”
She removed a small key.
“Bank deposit box.”
“Where?”
“Downtown Los Angeles.”
“What’s inside?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why didn’t you open it?”
“It requires two keys.”
Daniel frowned.
“Where’s the second?”
Elena looked at him.
“You have it.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Yes.”
She pointed toward his wedding ring.
Daniel looked down.
He still wore the ring Sarah had given him.
Three years after her death, he had never been able to remove it permanently.
“Inside.”
Daniel examined the ring.
There was a nearly invisible seam.
He twisted it.
A tiny metal piece slid free.
A key.
Daniel stared.
Sarah had carried the truth closer to him than he ever knew.
Two hours later, with Detective Sloan present, they opened the deposit box.
Inside were three things.
A flash drive.
A handwritten letter.
And an old photograph.
Daniel opened the letter first.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, something happened to me.
His hands began shaking.
He continued.
Sarah explained everything.
She had discovered Michael laundering company funds through properties controlled by their father’s former business partner.
She believed Daniel’s signature had been digitally copied.
She had gathered enough evidence to expose them.
But there was something worse.
Michael had discovered that Sarah knew.
She feared him.
And she feared another person even more.
Daniel reached the final paragraph.
Then stopped.
Sloan noticed.
“What?”
Daniel read the line again.
Do not trust Vanessa Hale.
Daniel closed his eyes.
The room disappeared around him.
Sarah knew Vanessa.
Before the accident.
Before Daniel supposedly met her.
Vanessa hadn’t entered his life by coincidence.
She had been placed there.
Daniel immediately called Sloan.
“We need to talk to Vanessa.”
At the detention facility, Vanessa looked exhausted.
Daniel placed Sarah’s letter on the table.
“You knew my wife.”
Vanessa stared at it.
“Yes.”
“You lied from the first day we met.”
“Yes.”
“Michael sent you.”
“At first.”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“Why?”
“To watch you.”
“And then?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Then I fell in love with you.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You expect that to matter?”
“No.”
“Did you know Michael killed Sarah?”
“Not until later.”
“When?”
“The night before I moved into your house.”
Daniel stared.
“And you stayed?”
“He threatened Lily.”
Daniel’s anger faltered.
Vanessa continued.
“He told me if I left, the same thing would happen to her.”
“So you terrorized her instead?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I needed her to stop talking about what she remembered.”
“You told her I would abandon her.”
“Yes.”
“You isolated her.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to silence Elena.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Daniel stood.
“I almost married you.”
“I know.”
He turned toward the door.
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
“There’s something else.”
He looked back.
Vanessa whispered:
“Michael didn’t order me to watch you.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then who did?”
Vanessa’s answer made him sit back down.
“Your mother.”
Daniel stared at her.
“My mother?”
Evelyn Mercer.
Seventy-one years old.
Elegant.
Charitable.
The woman who had comforted Daniel after Sarah died.
The grandmother Lily adored.
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew about the accounts.”
“No.”
“She knew about all of it.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She hated Michael after what he did to the company.”
“That’s what she wanted you to believe.”
Daniel stood again.
“You’re lying.”
“Check the flash drive.”
Daniel stopped.
Vanessa leaned forward.
“There’s a video Sarah recorded three days before she died.”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“What video?”
“Your mother meeting Michael.”
Daniel stared.
“What were they discussing?”
May you like
Vanessa’s answer came quietly.
“You.”
