Chapter 3 - THE ROAD WHERE SARAH DIED At 11:47 p.m., Daniel Mercer drove toward the place where his life had ended once before.

Rain began falling as he entered the canyon.

It was the same kind of rain that had fallen three years earlier.

Cold.

Relentless.

Turning asphalt into black glass.

Detective Sloan had ordered him not to go alone.

Daniel agreed.

Then he lied.

Because the message on his phone had included another sentence.

POLICE FOLLOW YOU, LILY DIES.

Daniel would not gamble with his daughter.

Not even once.

The road curved sharply.

His headlights swept across the old guardrail.

Daniel’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.

He remembered receiving the call about Sarah.

He remembered identifying her body.

He remembered Lily waking at night screaming about headlights.

He had believed those nightmares were a child’s attempt to understand death.

Now he wondered whether she had been trying to tell him the truth.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

“Where’s Lily?”

Daniel demanded.

“Keep driving.”

“If you hurt her—”

“You still think I’m the person you should fear.”

“Who else?”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“That’s why this worked for so long.”

The call ended.

Daniel drove another mile.

Then he saw a vehicle parked near the overlook.

He stopped.

Vanessa stood beside it.

Alone.

Daniel got out.

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“Show me.”

“Give me the phone.”

Daniel held Lily’s device inside his jacket.

“You threw Elena down the stairs.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“She grabbed me.”

“The video says otherwise.”

“The video shows part of an argument.”

“About Lily.”

Vanessa looked toward the canyon.

“You really want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“No, Daniel. You want a truth that lets you hate me.”

He stepped closer.

“My daughter is missing.”

“And you still haven’t asked the right question.”

“What question?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Who took her?”

Daniel froze.

“You did.”

“No.”

“You disappeared from police custody.”

“Because someone told me Lily had been taken.”

Daniel stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“None of this makes sense because you’re starting the story three years too late.”

She reached into her purse.

Daniel tensed.

Vanessa slowly removed a photograph.

She handed it to him.

Daniel looked down.

Sarah.

His dead wife.

Standing beside Elena.

The photograph had been taken outside a restaurant.

Behind them stood a third person.

Daniel’s brother.

Michael.

Daniel looked up.

“What is this?”

“Your wife was investigating your brother before she died.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“That’s insane.”

“Michael had been stealing from Mercer Development for years.”

“No.”

“Sarah discovered it.”

“You’re lying.”

“She copied financial records. She was going to tell you.”

Daniel shook his head.

“My brother loved Sarah.”

“Your brother loves money.”

A vehicle appeared around the curve.

Daniel turned.

Headlights blinded him.

The vehicle stopped.

A man stepped out.

Michael Mercer.

Daniel stared.

“Michael?”

His brother raised his hands.

“Danny, listen to me.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

Daniel looked between them.

“What the hell is happening?”

Michael pointed at Vanessa.

“She kidnapped Lily.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“He’s lying.”

“Where’s my daughter?”

Michael approached.

“She’s safe.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“You know where she is?”

Michael stopped.

Too late.

Daniel understood.

“You have her.”

Michael sighed.

“Daniel—”

“YOU HAVE MY DAUGHTER?”

“I’m protecting her.”

“From whom?”

Michael looked at Vanessa.

Daniel turned.

Vanessa was crying now.

“She wasn’t supposed to die.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Sarah?”

Vanessa nodded.

“I was there that night.”

Michael shouted.

“Shut up.”

Daniel looked at his brother.

Something ancient and terrible seemed to move behind Michael’s eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“Sarah confronted him.”

“Vanessa!”

“She had documents proving he stole millions.”

Daniel could barely breathe.

“She called me because she knew I worked with Michael.”

Daniel stared.

“You knew him before you met me?”

“Yes.”

The betrayal struck almost as hard as the revelation.

“How long?”

“Years.”

Daniel stepped back.

Vanessa continued.

“Michael told me to convince Sarah not to expose him. I tried.”

“And when she refused?”

Vanessa looked toward the broken guardrail.

“Michael followed her.”

Daniel’s eyes moved to his brother.

“No.”

Michael shook his head.

“She’s manipulating you.”

Vanessa shouted.

“Tell him about the truck!”

Daniel froze.

“What truck?”

Michael’s face changed.

Vanessa pointed toward the road.

“The black pickup that forced Sarah toward the edge.”

Daniel remembered something.

A detail from the accident report.

Black paint on Sarah’s rear bumper.

Police believed it came from an earlier collision.

Daniel stared at his brother.

“You had a black truck.”

Michael said nothing.

“You sold it after Sarah died.”

Still nothing.

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Michael.”

His brother finally whispered:

“It was an accident.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Michael continued.

“I wanted her to stop.”

“You hit her car?”

“I tapped the bumper.”

Daniel lunged.

He grabbed Michael by the jacket.

“SHE DIED!”

Michael shoved him backward.

“I DIDN’T KNOW LILY WAS IN THE CAR!”

Silence.

Daniel froze.

There it was.

The truth.

Not a confession carefully constructed by police.

Not evidence interpreted years later.

His brother had said it himself.

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

She was staring at Michael.

Michael realized what he had done.

Then another voice came through the darkness.

“Neither did Mom.”

Lily.

Daniel spun around.

She stood near the parked SUV.

A phone was raised in her hand.

Recording.

“Lily!”

Daniel ran toward her.

Michael moved first.

He grabbed the girl.

Daniel stopped.

“Let her go.”

Michael wrapped an arm around Lily.

“Give me the phone.”

Lily screamed.

Daniel raised both hands.

“Michael. She’s your niece.”

“She recorded everything.”

“She’s nine years old!”

“She’ll destroy my life.”

Daniel stared at his brother.

Then said quietly:

“You destroyed your life three years ago.”

Sirens erupted.

Red and blue lights flooded the canyon.

Michael looked around in panic.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“You really thought I came alone?”

Detective Sloan stepped from an unmarked vehicle.

“Michael Mercer! Release the child!”

Michael tightened his grip.

Lily suddenly slammed her heel onto his foot.

He stumbled.

Daniel charged.

He pulled Lily away.

Police surrounded Michael.

Seconds later, he was on the pavement in handcuffs.

Daniel held his daughter so tightly she could barely breathe.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily sobbed against him.

“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.”

“I didn’t remember everything.”

“You never had to.”

Vanessa stood nearby.

An officer approached her.

“Vanessa Hale, you’re under arrest in connection with the assault on Elena Ruiz.”

Daniel looked at her.

Vanessa didn’t resist.

As the officer cuffed her, she met Daniel’s eyes.

“I did terrible things.”

Daniel said nothing.

“But Sarah’s death wasn’t one of them.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you stayed silent.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward Michael.

“Because he had something on me.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?”

She smiled sadly.

“You’ll find it in Elena’s files.”

The police car door closed behind her.

Daniel stood in the rain with Lily.

He thought the nightmare had finally ended.

He was wrong.

Because when Detective Sloan examined Elena’s hidden files that night, she discovered something nobody expected.

Michael hadn’t stolen millions from Mercer Development.

He had stolen nearly eighty million dollars.

May you like

And according to the records—

most of it had been transferred into an account bearing Daniel’s name.
