Chapter 1 - My 14-year-old niece just accidentally exposed the family’s biggest lie.

“Get away from my daughter!”The frying pan hit the kitchen floor with a metallic crash, splattering scrambled eggs across the tile.

Eight-year-old Lily Bennett screamed and clutched the side of her chair as my sister-in-law, Melissa, lunged for the pan again. “She sat at the wrong table!” Melissa shouted. For one stunned second, nobody moved. Then I did. I shoved myself between them, grabbed Melissa’s wrist, and pushed her backward hard enough to make her stumble into the counter.

“What is wrong with you?” I yelled. My husband Ryan rushed in from the hallway, his father right behind him. Lily was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

A red mark was already rising along her forearm where the hot edge of the pan had grazed her. Melissa pointed at my daughter like Lily had committed some terrible crime.

“That chair was for Emma!” Emma was Melissa’s fourteen-year-old daughter, who was standing frozen near the refrigerator.

“It’s a chair,” I snapped. “You nearly burned a child over a chair.” Melissa’s face changed. Not anger. Fear.

She looked at Ryan. Then at their father. “Tell her,” she whispered. Ryan went pale. “Melissa, stop.” “No.” Her voice cracked.

“She needs to know why Lily was never supposed to sit there.” I stared at my husband. “What does that mean?” Before he could answer, Emma burst into tears.

“Mom, you said nobody would ever find the envelope.” Every adult in the kitchen went completely still.

“What envelope?” I asked. Melissa turned toward Emma so fast that Ryan stepped between them. And that was when I noticed the loose floorboard beneath the table.
