Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO KNEW HER NAMEThe man stood in the doorway wearing a charcoal-gray suit and a dark overcoat despite the warm afternoon.

He looked like someone who had never rushed for anything in his life.
Late fifties.
Silver hair.
Cold blue eyes.
A thin scar crossed the left side of his jaw.
I had never seen him before.
But Lily knew him.
She screamed.
Not loudly.
Not the way a child screams when she's startled.
It was a small, terrified sound.
“Mommy.”
I immediately stepped in front of her.
The man's eyes moved toward Lily.
Something flickered across his face.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
He knew her.
I turned to Ryan.
“Who is he?”
Ryan didn't answer.
The stranger smiled faintly.
“Hello, Claire.”
My skin prickled.
“You know my name.”
“I know much more than that.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“You need to leave.”
The man ignored him.
“I came for the envelope.”
My heart pounded.
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because it belongs to me.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You break into my family's house and demand an envelope with my name on it?”
“I didn't break in.”
He glanced toward Robert.
“Your father-in-law invited me.”
I looked at Robert.
His face was gray.
“Dad?”
Robert couldn't speak.
The man smiled.
“My name is Daniel Mercer.”
The name meant nothing to me.
Then Ryan whispered:
“Daniel was my father's attorney.”
I looked down at the envelope.
The trust agreement.
The hidden floorboard.
The secrecy.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Except one thing.
“Why does Lily know you?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“I have never met your daughter.”
Lily clutched my dress.
“He's lying.”
The entire room froze.
Daniel looked at her.
“What did you say?”
Lily's eyes were wide.
“You came to Grandma's house.”
I looked at Ryan.
“When?”
Lily whispered:
“When I was little.”
Daniel took one step forward.
I stepped back.
“Don't come closer.”
He stopped.
“Lily has an excellent memory.”
“No,” I said.
“She remembers because you frightened her.”
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“What did she see?”
I looked at my daughter.
“Lily?”
She pointed toward him.
“He had the same ring.”
Daniel instinctively covered his right hand.
A black stone ring.
My stomach tightened.
“Why were you near my daughter?”
He didn't answer.
I turned toward Ryan.
“Tell me.”
Ryan looked shattered.
“Claire, I swear I didn't know he was there.”
“Then who knew?”
Silence.
Melissa started crying again.
I turned toward her.
“You.”
She shook her head.
“I was trying to protect Emma.”
“From what?”
“From him.”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“Enough.”
His voice carried a quiet authority that made everyone freeze.
He looked at Melissa.
“You should have burned that envelope.”
My blood ran cold.
“You told her to destroy it?”
Melissa looked down.
“No.”
Daniel sighed.
“That was your mistake.”
Ryan moved toward him.
“Stay away from my family.”
Daniel looked at him almost sadly.
“You still think this is about your family.”
“What is it about?”
Daniel's eyes moved toward Lily.
“It's about hers.”
I felt Lily's hand tighten around mine.
“Explain.”
Daniel stared at me for several seconds.
Then he said:
“Your daughter was never supposed to inherit anything.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The Bennett family trust was designed before you ever met Ryan.”
“So?”
“So Lily changed everything.”
I shook my head.
“I don't understand.”
Daniel took a breath.
“Because Lily was not the child your husband's family expected.”
I looked at Ryan.
He was crying.
“Ryan?”
He whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
My heart shattered.
“Sorry for what?”
Daniel answered.
“For the fact that Ryan knew there was another name on the original trust.”
I stared at my husband.
“What name?”
Daniel said it.
“Lily Bennett.”
I looked at the envelope.
Then at my daughter.
Then at Ryan.
“What does that mean?”
Ryan wiped his face.
“It means my father knew about Lily before she was born.”
I felt sick.
“How?”
Ryan swallowed.
“Because he ordered a paternity investigation.”
I stepped backward.
“Why?”
“Because he believed you were trying to trap me into marriage.”
The words hit like a slap.
I stared at him.
“You let your father investigate my daughter?”
“I didn't know.”
“You just said you knew.”
“I knew about the trust. I didn't know about the investigation until years later.”
Daniel interrupted.
“The investigation produced an unexpected result.”
I looked at him.
“What result?”
He hesitated.
Then handed me a second sheet of paper.
My hands trembled as I unfolded it.
There was a date.
Eight years earlier.
A medical facility.
A laboratory.
A genetic analysis.
And one sentence circled in red.
PATERNITY: INCONCLUSIVE.
I looked up.
“Inconclusive?”
Daniel nodded.
“Your daughter was never genetically tested against Ryan.”
I frowned.
“What are you saying?”
“The sample they used wasn't Ryan's.”
Silence.
Ryan stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
Daniel's voice was cold.
“It's the reason the trust was rewritten.”
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
My little girl.
Eight years of memories flashed through my mind.
Her first steps.
Her first day of school.
The fever she had at four.
The way she slept with one hand curled around my finger.
Nothing could change what she meant to me.
But the question remained.
If Ryan wasn't her biological father—
then who was?
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I looked down.
A young man stood beside me.
I knew him.
My breath stopped.
I had not seen that face in eight years.
Ryan saw the photograph.
He staggered backward.
“No.”
I whispered the man's name.
“Ethan.”
Daniel nodded.
“Ethan Cole.”
Ryan stared at me.
“You told me he was dead.”
My mouth went dry.
“I thought he was.”
Daniel smiled without warmth.
“He isn't.”
May you like
The kitchen door suddenly slammed shut.
And from upstairs came the sound of a child's bedroom window opening.
