Chapter 2 - THE FLOORBOARD

Nobody moved.
The kitchen suddenly felt too small for all of us.
The smell of scrambled eggs hung in the air, mixed with the sharp metallic scent of the frying pan and the faint sweetness of orange juice that had spilled across the table.
Lily was still crying.
I pulled her against me.
“Mommy…”
“I’ve got you,” I whispered. “I’ve got you.”
Her little body trembled against my chest.
Across the kitchen, Melissa stood frozen beside the counter.
Ryan was between her and Emma.
His father, Robert, had one hand gripping the back of a chair, his face drained of color.
And Emma—
Emma was staring at the floor.
Specifically, at the loose floorboard beneath the table.
“Emma,” I said quietly.
She looked up.
Her cheeks were wet.
“What envelope are you talking about?”
Melissa stepped forward.
“She's confused.”
“No,” I said.
My voice surprised even me.
It was calm.
Too calm.
“She's fourteen. She knows exactly what she said.”
Ryan looked at me.
“Claire—”
“Don't.”
He stopped.
I pointed toward the floor.
“What is under that board?”
Nobody answered.
The silence was an answer all by itself.
I lowered Lily carefully into the chair beside me.
“Stay here, sweetheart.”
“But Mommy…”
“I’m right here.”
I crouched down.
My fingers slid underneath the edge of the warped wooden board.
It lifted more easily than it should have.
Someone had opened it recently.
There was a narrow hollow beneath it.
And inside that hollow was a white envelope.
My heartbeat slammed against my ribs.
I reached for it.
Melissa screamed.
“DON’T!”
Her voice echoed through the kitchen.
I stopped.
Then slowly looked at her.
“What?”
She was breathing hard.
Ryan turned toward his sister.
“Melissa.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
Melissa shook her head.
Robert closed his eyes.
“God help us.”
I pulled the envelope out.
It was old.
The paper had yellowed around the edges.
My name was written across the front.
CLAIRE BENNETT.
My blood went cold.
I looked at Ryan.
“Why is my name on this?”
He didn't answer.
I turned the envelope over.
The seal had already been broken.
Someone had read it.
Inside was a folded document.
I opened it.
The first line made my stomach drop.
CONFIDENTIAL — FAMILY TRUST AGREEMENT
I read the next sentence.
Then the next.
I couldn't breathe.
“Ryan…”
He stepped toward me.
I held the paper away.
“Don't.”
“Claire, please.”
“What is this?”
He swallowed.
“It’s complicated.”
“No.”
I stared at him.
“It isn't complicated. Either you know what this is, or you don't.”
His eyes dropped.
“I know.”
Something inside me cracked.
“You knew?”
“I knew there was a document.”
“A document?”
Melissa suddenly began crying.
“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.”
I turned toward her.
“What wasn't?”
She wiped her face.
“Lily wasn't supposed to know.”
My heart stopped.
“What does Lily have to do with this?”
Melissa looked at Ryan.
Ryan looked at his father.
And Robert whispered:
“Everything.”
The room went silent again.
I slowly stood.
“What does my daughter have to do with a family trust?”
Robert shook his head.
“Claire, you need to sit down.”
“I don't want to sit down.”
My voice broke.
“I want the truth.”
Ryan walked toward me.
“Eight years ago, before Lily was born…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Before Lily was born, what?”
He looked at our daughter.
Then back at me.
“There was a decision made about her.”
My stomach turned.
“What decision?”
Nobody answered.
Then Emma whispered:
“They wanted her gone.”
Melissa snapped toward her.
“Emma!”
But it was too late.
I had heard her.
I looked at my husband.
“Who wanted my daughter gone?”
Ryan's face crumpled.
“Claire…”
“WHO?”
Robert finally spoke.
“Your father-in-law's estate lawyer.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
Robert looked toward the window.
“Years ago, there was an agreement involving Ryan's inheritance.”
I felt dizzy.
“What does that have to do with Lily?”
Robert's voice dropped.
“The trust had a condition.”
“What condition?”
He hesitated.
Then said:
“If Ryan had a child outside the family’s expectations, the inheritance could be redirected.”
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“So this is about money?”
“No,” Robert said.
His eyes filled with shame.
“It became about money.”
I looked at Melissa.
She couldn't meet my eyes.
“Why did you attack Lily?”
Melissa whispered:
“Because she sat in Emma's chair.”
“That doesn't explain anything.”
“It wasn't the chair.”
I looked down at the floor.
The envelope.
The hidden compartment.
The old trust agreement.
And suddenly one thought hit me.
“Melissa.”
She looked up.
“Why was Emma supposed to sit there?”
Her lips parted.
No sound came out.
Then Emma answered for her.
“Because Mom put the envelope there.”
I turned toward her.
“When?”
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
“Last Christmas.”
Ryan went pale.
I looked at him.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Don't lie to me.”
“I didn't know she put it there.”
“But you knew about the envelope.”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
I felt something inside me collapse.
My husband had known.
For how long?
I stepped backward.
Lily reached for my hand.
“Mommy?”
I took it.
“It's okay.”
But it wasn't.
Not anymore.
I looked at Ryan.
“What exactly is in that envelope?”
He stared at me.
“The truth about Lily's birth.”
The kitchen seemed to tilt.
I couldn't hear anything for several seconds.
“What?”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“There’s something you were never told.”
My fingers tightened around Lily's hand.
“What weren't I told?”
Before he could answer, the front door slammed.
Someone had entered the house.
Heavy footsteps crossed the hallway.
Then a man's voice called from the living room.
“Ryan?”
Robert looked terrified.
Melissa whispered:
“No.”
Ryan's face went white.
I looked toward the doorway.
“Who is that?”
Nobody answered.
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared beneath the kitchen door.
Then the man stepped inside.
And the moment I saw his face, I understood why everyone had been afraid of the envelope.
Because he was the one person who had no right to know about Lily.
May you like
Yet somehow—
he already did.
