Chapter 5 - THE OLD BENNETT PROPERTYAt 11:32 p.m., I drove through the iron gates of the abandoned Bennett estate.

The house had been empty for almost a decade.
The windows were boarded.
The gardens were dead.
The once-grand stone walls were blackened by years of rain.
I parked near the front steps.
Ryan's car remained far behind.
He had promised to stay away.
He had also promised he would be close enough to reach me if something went wrong.
The envelope sat on the passenger seat.
I stared at it.
Then I whispered:
“Please let my baby come home.”
I stepped outside.
The cold air cut through my coat.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
I walked toward the house.
The front door was already open.
I stopped.
Then entered.
The smell of dust and old wood filled my lungs.
A grandfather clock stood frozen in the hallway.
11:41.
My footsteps echoed.
“I'm here.”
A voice answered from upstairs.
“Come up.”
I froze.
The voice.
I knew it.
Not from the phone.
From somewhere deeper.
Somewhere buried in memory.
I climbed the stairs.
At the top was the old study.
The door was open.
I pushed it.
And saw Lily.
She sat in a chair.
Her hands were untied.
Her face was wet with tears.
“Mommy!”
I ran toward her.
A man stepped from behind the curtains.
I stopped.
Ethan Cole.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
Lily ran into my arms.
I held her so tightly she squeaked.
“Oh, baby.”
“I knew you'd come.”
“I'll always come.”
Ethan watched us.
His face was full of pain.
“I didn't hurt her.”
I glared at him.
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
“I protected her.”
“From what?”
He looked toward the door.
“From them.”
“Who?”
He whispered:
“Your family.”
I stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Ethan reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed me eight years earlier.
Pregnant.
Standing outside the hospital.
Beside me was Ryan.
And across the parking lot—
Robert.
But Robert wasn't alone.
He was talking to another man.
A man I recognized from Daniel's photograph.
“Your father-in-law knew I was alive.”
I stared at the photograph.
“Why?”
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Because he knew she was mine.”
My breath stopped.
“What?”
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“Lily is my daughter.”
I couldn't speak.
Behind me, a floorboard creaked.
I spun around.
Ryan stood in the doorway.
His face was devastated.
“Claire…”
Ethan stepped back.
“You weren't supposed to bring him.”
“I didn't.”
Ryan looked at Ethan.
“I followed her.”
The two men stared at each other.
Then Ryan said:
“I always knew.”
I turned.
“What?”
Ryan's voice shook.
“I knew Ethan might be alive.”
My heart shattered again.
“But I didn't know he was Lily's father.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You suspected.”
Ryan looked at him.
“For years.”
I stared at my husband.
“How could you hide this?”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Because every time I tried to find the truth, someone threatened you.”
“Who?”
Ryan looked toward the hallway.
Before he could answer, the lights suddenly came on.
Dozens of photographs covered the walls.
Photographs of Lily.
At school.
At the park.
At our house.
Sleeping.
Playing.
Walking.
My blood ran cold.
“Someone has been watching her.”
Ethan nodded.
“For years.”
Ryan whispered:
“Dad.”
A slow clap came from the doorway.
Robert stepped inside.
Beside him stood Daniel Mercer.
And behind them—
Melissa.
I stared at her.
“What are you doing here?”
Melissa's face was covered in tears.
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“I came to tell you the truth.”
Robert raised his hand.
“Don't.”
Melissa ignored him.
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“I'm done being afraid.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Melissa.”
She looked at him.
“You can't scare me anymore.”
Then she turned toward me.
“The envelope isn't about money.”
She swallowed.
“It's about what happened the night Lily was born.”
The room fell silent.
Melissa whispered:
“Your father-in-law ordered someone to take Lily from the hospital.”
My heart stopped.
“And the person who was supposed to take her…”
May you like
She looked at Ethan.
“…was me.”
