Chapter 8 - Claire’s SisterClaire had not reconnected the camera only because she was brave.
She had history.
Two years earlier, her older sister Hannah had been in Mrs. Whitmore’s class.
Hannah had been outspoken.
She questioned grades.
Challenged unfair rules.
Mrs. Whitmore hated that.
During one detention, the classroom camera went dark.
Mrs. Whitmore made Hannah stand in front of the class and apologize for “infecting others with disrespect.”
Hannah refused.
Mrs. Whitmore threatened to block her from an honors recommendation.
Hannah eventually transferred classes.
Her family complained.
Principal Grayson called it a personality conflict.
Claire had never forgotten.
When she saw Mrs. Whitmore unplug the camera before Jordan’s punishment, she knew.
Not exactly what would happen.
Only that adults had failed once already.
She would not let darkness protect the same teacher twice.
Jordan listened while Claire told him.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“I didn’t want you thinking I plugged the camera in because of my sister.”
“Why would that matter?”
“Because I wanted you to know I believed you.”
Jordan looked at her.
“You believed me before there was anything to believe.”
Claire shook her head.
