Chapter 9 - Grayson’s SignaturePrincipal Grayson had signed three conflict waivers involving Whitmore Academic Consulting.
Two were missing from district records.
One survived in an email attachment.
It allowed the company to sponsor an academic event while Mrs. Whitmore coordinated student participation.
District policy required full disclosure.
Grayson approved it anyway.
When investigators interviewed him, he insisted:
“They brought money into the school when nobody else would.”
Technology.
Books.
Field trips.
Security upgrades.
The Whitmores were useful.
Grayson had confused useful with untouchable.
Then Mr. Bennett found an old email.
He had warned Grayson:
Camera 214 has had repeated unexplained outages during Whitmore’s periods. Recommend physical inspection and staff review.
Grayson replied:
We cannot accuse a high-performing teacher based on power interruptions. Facilities will monitor.
Facilities never inspected the outlet.
Grayson had not ordered a cover-up.
Something more ordinary.
He had chosen not to look.
