Chapter 11 - EDEN IS BURNING They saw the smoke before they saw the house.

Claire screamed.

“No!”

Michael accelerated along the mountain road.

The farmhouse appeared beyond the trees.

Flames climbed from the eastern wing.

Adrian jumped from the SUV before it fully stopped.

“NOAH STAYS HERE!”

Claire ran after him.

“Children are inside!”

Reed called emergency services.

Elias and Michael rushed toward the rear entrance.

Vanessa, wounded but conscious, remained with Noah.

Adrian kicked open the front door.

Smoke swallowed him.

“HELLO?”

A child screamed upstairs.

Adrian ran toward the sound.

Claire followed.

They found two girls trapped inside a bedroom.

Adrian broke the window.

“Claire, take them!”

He returned to the hallway.

Another scream.

Downstairs.

He followed it toward the basement.

The door had been chained.

From the outside.

Adrian’s blood turned cold.

This wasn’t an accidental fire.

Someone had deliberately trapped them.

He fired at the chain.

Once.

Twice.

The lock broke.

Six children rushed out.

“Go!”

A teenage boy remained downstairs.

“What are you doing?”

“My sister!”

“Where?”

“Back room!”

Adrian ran.

He found a little girl unconscious beside a bed.

He lifted her.

The ceiling groaned.

“MOVE!”

They reached the stairs seconds before part of the basement collapsed.

Outside, Claire counted.

“Ten.”

Michael looked around.

“There should be twelve.”

The teenage boy pointed toward the woods.

“Lily and Ben ran when the men came.”

“What men?”

“Government people.”

Reed looked at Adrian.

“Kane.”

Adrian turned toward the forest.

“I’ll find them.”

Noah stepped from the SUV.

“Dad.”

“I told you to stay inside.”

“Ben knows me.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Noah looked toward Claire.

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian turned slowly.

“How does Ben know Noah?”

Claire answered.

“They met before.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Noah was four.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Claire’s voice dropped.

“Here.”

Adrian stared.

“You brought Noah here?”

“Once.”

“Why?”

Claire looked at Noah.

“Because Ben is his brother.”

The burning house cracked behind them.

Adrian said nothing.

Claire continued quickly.

“Not biological.”

Adrian exhaled.

“Claire.”

“I should have said that first.”

“Yes.”

“Ben’s mother saved Noah’s life after the crash.”

“How?”

“She was a nurse.”

Claire looked toward the forest.

“And Victor killed her for it.”

Noah tugged Adrian’s sleeve.

“Dad, Ben will hide near water.”

“How do you know?”

“He told me.”

“When?”

Noah thought.

“When Mom brought me here.”

Adrian crouched.

“You remember that?”

“A little.”

Claire stared at him.

“You told me you didn’t.”

Noah shrugged.

“You were scared.”

That stopped everyone.

Noah looked at his mother.

“So I pretended I forgot.”

Adrian’s heart broke again.

How much had this child understood while adults believed they were protecting him?

Adrian stood.

“Where’s the water?”

Michael pointed north.

“Creek.”

They found Lily first.

She was hiding beneath a fallen tree.

Then they heard Ben.

“Stay back!”

A teenage boy stood beside the creek holding a hunting rifle.

Adrian raised his hands.

“Ben?”

“Who are you?”

“Noah’s father.”

Ben’s expression changed.

“Noah?”

“He’s safe.”

Ben lowered the weapon slightly.

Then someone stepped behind him.

A man in a dark jacket.

Gun raised.

Adrian fired first.

The attacker fell.

Ben stared.

Adrian ran toward him.

“More coming?”

Ben nodded.

“Four.”

Gunfire exploded through the trees.

Adrian pulled both children down.

Reed returned fire.

Elias appeared from the ridge.

“MOVE!”

They ran toward the house.

By the time they reached the clearing, firefighters were arriving.

Kane’s attackers withdrew.

For now.

Claire hugged Ben.

The boy stiffened.

“You came back.”

“I promised.”

“You disappeared.”

“I know.”

“You always disappear.”

Claire had no answer.

Adrian noticed something around Ben’s neck.

A key.

“What’s that?”

Ben looked at him.

“My mom gave it to me.”

“What does it open?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire stared.

“Let me see.”

Ben stepped back.

“No.”

“Ben.”

“She said only give it to Noah’s father.”

Everyone looked at Adrian.

Ben removed the key.

“Are you really him?”

Adrian looked at Noah.

“Yes.”

Ben handed him the key.

Attached was a small metal tag.

VALE NATIONAL BANK.

BOX 317.

Michael swore.

“What?”

Michael stared at the key.

“That bank closed fifteen years ago.”

Adrian looked at him.

“When you died?”

“Yes.”

Claire whispered:

“Michael…”

He nodded.

“The day I disappeared.”

Reed frowned.

“What’s in the box?”

Michael looked at Adrian.

“I don’t know.”

“Someone does.”

Adrian looked at Ben.

“What did your mother tell you?”

Ben swallowed.

“She said if the house ever burned, the box would tell us who started everything.”

That night, the survivors moved to a secure motel under Reed’s supervision.

Adrian sat beside Noah.

Claire approached.

“Can we talk?”

Noah looked between them.

“I can go.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No more secrets around him.”

Claire sat.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Noah asked the question Adrian couldn’t.

“Why didn’t you come home?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Because Victor told me if I did, he would kill you.”

“Did you believe him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you believe Dad couldn’t protect me?”

Claire looked at Adrian.

“I believed Adrian would die trying.”

Noah thought about that.

“He probably would.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Claire reached for Noah’s hand.

“I watched you from far away.”

“You saw me?”

“Yes.”

“Birthdays?”

“Yes.”

“School?”

“Yes.”

“When I broke my arm?”

Claire laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

“You were there?”

“In a car across the street.”

Noah started crying.

“So you were always close?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you hug me?”

Claire broke.

Adrian looked away.

Some wounds had no villain.

Only consequences.

Later, Noah slept between them.

Adrian hadn’t planned it.

The boy simply refused to let either parent leave.

Claire whispered:

“I never stopped loving you.”

Adrian stared at the ceiling.

“That makes it worse.”

“I know.”

“I don’t know what happens after this.”

“I know.”

“But we get through it for him.”

“Yes.”

A knock came.

Reed entered.

“We found something.”

He placed a laptop on the table.

Security footage from Vale National Bank.

Old archives.

The date Michael disappeared.

A woman entered the bank.

Adrian leaned closer.

His mother.

She carried a baby.

Adrian frowned.

“That isn’t me.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

Claire looked terrified.

The footage showed Adrian’s mother entering the vault.

When she emerged, the baby was gone.

Adrian stared.

“Whose baby was that?”

Michael whispered:

“I never knew.”

Then the video changed.

Another camera.

Outside.

Adrian’s mother handed the baby to a man.

Victor Blackwood.

No one spoke.

Victor looked down at the infant.

Then handed it to a woman.

Claire gasped.

“That woman…”

Adrian looked at her.

“Who?”

Claire stared at the screen.

“My mother.”

Adrian felt cold.

May you like

Claire whispered:

“That baby was me.”
