Chapter 14 - THE ELEVEN-MINUTE WAR The safe house erupted.

Adrian threw Noah to the floor.
“DOWN!”
Glass exploded.
Reed returned fire.
Michael killed the lights.
Claire dragged Ben and the younger children toward the basement.
Elias shouted from the rear window.
“Eight men!”
Vanessa grabbed a weapon with her uninjured arm.
Adrian stopped her.
“You can barely stand.”
“I can still aim.”
A bullet punched through the wall.
Vanessa raised the gun.
“Apparently they can too.”
The attackers moved professionally.
No shouting.
No hesitation.
Not criminals.
Contractors.
Kane’s private army.
Reed’s phone remained connected.
Sarah’s voice came through.
“Reed, listen carefully.”
“Listening!”
“North side has two vehicles. East side three.”
“Exit?”
“Storm drain behind the basement.”
Michael stared.
“How does she know that?”
Sarah heard him.
“Because unlike you, Michael Hart, I actually read architectural plans.”
Michael smiled despite the gunfire.
“I like her.”
“Move!”
They evacuated the children first.
Adrian stayed behind.
Claire grabbed him.
“No.”
“I’ll cover them.”
“We cover them.”
“Claire—”
“I lost three years.”
Her eyes burned.
“I’m not losing another second hiding while you fight alone.”
Adrian stared at her.
There she was.
The woman he remembered.
Not the ghost.
Not the liar.
Claire.
He handed her a spare magazine.
“Stay behind me.”
She almost smiled.
“You always hated when I ignored that.”
“I still do.”
They fired toward the windows.
Outside, Reed guided the children toward the storm drain.
Noah stopped.
“Dad!”
“GO!”
Noah hesitated.
Adrian shouted:
“I WILL ALWAYS COME FOR YOU!”
Noah understood.
He ran.
The words had become more than a promise.
They were their family’s code.
Michael triggered a smoke device.
The house disappeared in white fog.
“NOW!”
Adrian, Claire, Elias and Vanessa retreated.
They reached the basement.
Then Vanessa fell.
Her wound had reopened.
Claire grabbed her.
“I’ve got her.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“Leave me.”
Adrian turned.
“Not happening.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“No.”
He lifted her.
“But Noah would never forgive me.”
Vanessa started crying.
They reached the storm drain.
Behind them, boots entered the basement.
Adrian fired twice.
Then crawled into the tunnel.
The contractors followed.
Reed waited at the far end.
“Move!”
Everyone emerged beside a river.
Sarah’s voice continued through the phone.
“There’s a freight bridge half a mile west.”
Reed looked at Adrian.
“She has transport.”
They ran.
A black van waited beneath the bridge.
A woman stood beside it.
Late fifties.
Silver-streaked hair.
Sarah Mitchell.
Reed stopped.
They stared at each other.
Fifteen years of grief existed between them.
Sarah slapped him.
Reed blinked.
“What was that for?”
“For taking fifteen years to call.”
Then she hugged him.
Adrian almost smiled.
Sarah looked at him.
“Adrian Vale.”
“You knew my father.”
Her expression softened.
“Yes.”
“What was he like?”
Sarah looked toward the approaching headlights.
“Alive long enough to answer later if we survive.”
They loaded everyone into the van.
Sarah drove.
Behind them, the safe house exploded.
Noah watched through the rear window.
“Why do they keep burning houses?”
Nobody answered.
Sarah looked at him through the mirror.
“Because people who can’t destroy the truth try to destroy where it lives.”
Noah thought about that.
“Then we should put it everywhere.”
Sarah smiled.
“Exactly.”
She drove them to an abandoned television studio.
Reed frowned.
“What is this?”
“A broadcast relay.”
Claire understood.
“You can release the drive.”
Sarah nodded.
“Not through normal networks.”
Adrian placed the flash drive on the table.
“How long?”
“Twenty minutes.”
“Do it.”
Sarah connected the drive.
Upload began.
2%.
5%.
9%.
Then the screen froze.
Sarah cursed.
“What?”
“Someone’s attacking the relay.”
“Kane?”
“Probably.”
The percentage dropped.
8%.
7%.
Claire stared.
“He’s reversing it.”
Sarah typed furiously.
“Not if I isolate the line.”
Lights flickered.
Reed looked toward the door.
“They found us?”
“No.”
Sarah stared at the monitors.
“Worse.”
A live television feed appeared.
Victor Blackwood stood at a podium.
Reporters surrounded him.
He looked weak.
Injured.
Sympathetic.
Perfect.
“My family has suffered unimaginable tragedy.”
Adrian watched.
Victor continued.
“My grandson Noah has been manipulated by dangerous individuals.”
Noah frowned.
“He lies a lot.”
“Yes,” Adrian said.
Victor held up a photograph.
Claire.
“My late daughter-in-law Claire was emotionally unstable before her death.”
Claire stared.
Victor continued.
“Recent claims that she survived are part of an elaborate fraud.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“I’m a fraud now.”
Adrian took her hand without thinking.
She looked down.
Neither moved away.
Victor continued.
“We ask Adrian Vale to surrender peacefully.”
Then a reporter shouted:
“Mr. Blackwood, do you deny allegations involving Deputy Director Kane?”
Victor’s face changed for half a second.
Sarah noticed.
“So he doesn’t know Kane is being exposed.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Meaning?”
“Kane is sacrificing Victor.”
Elias stared at the screen.
“My father doesn’t know.”
Victor had spent decades believing he controlled everyone.
But Kane was already preparing to bury him.
Upload resumed.
34%.
47%.
Then another video interrupted.
Marcus Kane.
He was inside a dark room.
And beside him—
Gabriel.
Alive.
Evelyn screamed.
“Dad!”
Kane smiled into the camera.
“Adrian.”
Gabriel’s face was bruised.
Kane pressed a gun against his head.
“You have something I want.”
Adrian looked at the ledger.
Kane continued.
“And I have something you want.”
Gabriel looked directly at the camera.
Then he laughed.
Kane frowned.
Gabriel said:
“You still don’t understand him.”
Kane tightened his grip.
“Understand who?”
“Adrian.”
Gabriel smiled.
“He doesn’t want me.”
Adrian froze.
Gabriel continued.
“He wants the truth.”
Kane’s expression darkened.
Gabriel looked into the camera.
“Release it, son.”
Evelyn began crying.
“Dad, no.”
“RELEASE EVERYTHING.”
Kane struck him.
The feed cut.
Sarah looked at Adrian.
Upload:
72%.
Evelyn grabbed his arm.
“Stop it.”
Adrian looked at her.
“He’ll kill him.”
“I know.”
“Then stop!”
Adrian stared at the screen.
81%.
Gabriel had made his choice.
But Evelyn was his daughter.
Adrian knew exactly what it meant to choose between truth and family.
Then Noah stepped beside him.
“Dad.”
Adrian looked down.
“What would you do if that was me?”
The question cut through everything.
Adrian turned to Sarah.
“Stop the upload.”
Evelyn gasped.
Sarah stared.
“Adrian—”
“STOP IT.”
Upload paused.
94%.
Six percent from destroying Kane.
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
“We get Gabriel first.”
Evelyn broke into tears.
Claire looked at Adrian with something he hadn’t seen in years.
Love.
Sarah closed the laptop.
“All right.”
Reed asked:
“How?”
Adrian looked at Victor on the television.
Then smiled.
“We use the one man Kane just betrayed.”
Elias understood.
“My father.”
May you like
Adrian nodded.
“For the first time in his life, Victor Blackwood is going to help us.”
