Chapter 4 - THE ROAD TO BOX 317

“VANESSA, THEY’RE COMING UP ON YOUR LEFT!”
Noah’s scream cut through the SUV seconds before another gunshot shattered what remained of the rear window.
Vanessa slammed the steering wheel right.
The SUV swerved violently across the highway, missing a delivery truck by inches. Horns exploded around them. Broken glass rolled across the floor beneath Noah’s knees.
“Stay down!”
“I am!”
“Don’t look back!”
But Noah looked anyway.
Two black vehicles were chasing them through the midnight traffic.
For an eight-year-old boy, the world should have been homework, cartoons, scraped knees, and arguments about bedtime.
Instead, Noah had spent one night discovering that the woman his father intended to marry had lied to him, his dead mother had hidden dangerous secrets, his godfather was a traitor, and strangers apparently wanted him dead.
“Is Dad coming?”
Vanessa tightened her grip on the wheel.
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“Because nothing in this world could stop him now.”
Three miles behind them, Adrian was proving her right.
His speedometer passed ninety.
Thomas Caldwell’s words repeated in his mind.
I’m already waiting for her.
The attorney Adrian had trusted for most of his adult life knew about Box 317.
That meant Claire’s conspiracy went deeper than Daniel.
Deeper than Vanessa.
Possibly deeper than Adrian’s own company.
His phone rang.
Detective Marcus Reed.
Adrian answered through the car speakers.
“Talk.”
“We have Daniel Mercer in custody.”
“Keep him alive.”
“That’s an unusual thing to say.”
“Tonight is unusual.”
Reed paused.
“Where are you?”
“Going after Noah.”
“What happened?”
“Vanessa took him.”
“You told officers she assaulted the boy earlier.”
“She did.”
“And now she has him?”
“Yes.”
“Adrian, stop chasing them and give me the location.”
“I don’t have time.”
“You’re going to make this worse.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“My son is being chased by armed men. Explain the version where waiting makes it better.”
Silence.
Then Reed’s tone changed.
“Armed men?”
“Black SUVs. At least two.”
“Where are they going?”
“First National Heritage Bank.”
Reed went quiet.
Too quiet.
Adrian noticed.
“What?”
“Adrian…”
“What?”
“That bank closed six years ago.”
Adrian’s foot eased slightly from the accelerator.
“What did you say?”
“The retail branch closed. The building was purchased by a private holding company.”
“Which company?”
“I’ll check.”
“Check now.”
Keyboard sounds came through the phone.
Then Reed stopped typing.
“Blackwood Heritage Holdings.”
Adrian felt ice move through his veins.
It wasn’t a bank anymore.
It was Blackwood property.
Vanessa was driving Noah directly into enemy territory.
“Vanessa doesn’t know.”
“Then call her.”
“She won’t answer.”
“Send me her number.”
Adrian ignored him.
Ahead, red brake lights filled the highway.
Traffic.
“No.”
He jerked onto an exit ramp.
The navigation system recalculated.
Twenty-eight minutes.
Too long.
Meanwhile, Vanessa saw the bank’s old stone tower rising beyond the skyline.
“There.”
Noah lifted his head.
“Is that where Mom’s box is?”
“Yes.”
“Why did she give me the key?”
Vanessa looked at him through the mirror.
“What key?”
Noah immediately realized he had said too much.
“What key, Noah?”
He reached into his pocket.
The silver key appeared between his fingers.
Vanessa nearly stopped breathing.
“Where did you get that?”
“Mom gave it to me.”
“When?”
“I don’t remember.”
“You have to remember.”
Noah frowned.
“I was little.”
“How little?”
“Maybe five.”
That meant shortly before Claire died.
“What did she say?”
Noah looked down at the key.
“She said if people ever started lying about who my family was, I should give it to Dad.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Your dad?”
“Yes.”
“Not me?”
“No.”
The answer hurt more than she expected.
Claire had trusted Adrian.
Even after betraying him.
Even while hiding Noah’s bloodline.
She had still trusted him more than anyone else.
Including her own sister.
Another gunshot struck the SUV.
Vanessa screamed.
The rear tire exploded.
The vehicle spun.
Noah’s body slammed against the seat.
Vanessa fought the wheel.
“Hold on!”
The SUV crashed through a construction barrier and stopped sideways beneath an overpass.
Smoke rose from the destroyed tire.
Vanessa’s ears rang.
“Noah?”
Nothing.
She turned.
“Noah!”
The boy slowly raised his head.
“I’m okay.”
Relief nearly made her collapse.
Then headlights appeared behind them.
The first black vehicle stopped.
Doors opened.
Vanessa saw three men.
“Run.”
Noah stared at her.
“What?”
“RUN!”
She climbed out and pulled him through the passenger side.
They ran toward the construction site.
Behind them, men shouted.
Noah struggled to keep up.
Vanessa held his hand.
“Don’t let go!”
Concrete pillars surrounded them.
Plastic sheets snapped in the wind.
Footsteps followed.
Closer.
Closer.
Noah suddenly tripped.
Vanessa pulled him up.
A man appeared between two pillars.
“There!”
Vanessa shoved Noah behind her.
The man raised his weapon.
Then a car engine roared.
Headlights exploded across the construction site.
A sedan smashed through the temporary fence.
The armed man jumped aside.
The driver’s door opened before the vehicle fully stopped.
Adrian stepped out.
Noah screamed.
“DAD!”
Adrian saw the gunman.
He didn’t hesitate.
He grabbed a metal construction bar from the ground as the attacker rushed him.
One strike knocked the weapon away.
The second sent the man crashing against a pillar.
Another attacker came from behind.
Vanessa shouted.
“ADRIAN!”
He turned just in time.
The man tackled him.
They crashed onto the concrete.
Noah screamed.
Vanessa grabbed the fallen gun.
Her hands shook.
She aimed.
“GET OFF HIM!”
The attacker froze.
Vanessa’s finger trembled against the trigger.
Adrian pushed the man away and stood.
“Give me the gun.”
Vanessa did.
Immediately.
Adrian looked at Noah.
The boy ran into his arms.
Adrian dropped to his knees.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Did anyone touch you?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Adrian pulled him against his chest.
For several seconds, the conspiracy disappeared.
There were no Blackwoods.
No inheritance.
No Claire.
Only a father holding his son.
Then Adrian looked at Vanessa.
The warmth vanished.
“You took him.”
“I saved him.”
“You took him without telling me.”
“There was someone inside your security system.”
“You could have called.”
“I didn’t know who to trust.”
“You could have trusted me.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I was trying.”
“No. You were deciding for everyone again.”
She looked away.
Adrian’s words hit exactly where they should.
“You did it to Claire. You did it to Noah. You did it to me.”
“I know.”
“You keep calling secrecy protection.”
Vanessa whispered, “Because sometimes it was.”
“And sometimes it became abuse.”
She flinched.
Noah looked down.
Vanessa’s face collapsed with shame.
“You’re right.”
Before Adrian could answer, police sirens approached.
Detective Reed arrived minutes later.
Two attackers had fled.
One remained unconscious.
Reed stared at Adrian.
“You have a remarkable talent for finding trouble before I do.”
“Thomas Caldwell is involved.”
That erased Reed’s sarcasm.
“Your attorney?”
“He knows about Box 317.”
Reed glanced toward the distant bank tower.
“I checked the ownership.”
“I know.”
“Then we don’t go there.”
Adrian looked at Noah’s hand.
The silver key.
“We do.”
Reed shook his head.
“That building belongs to the Blackwoods.”
“Exactly.”
“That makes it a trap.”
“Yes.”
“And you still want to walk inside?”
Adrian looked at him.
“They’ve spent years trying to find what Claire hid. Whatever is inside Box 317 scares them.”
Reed understood.
“You think it’s evidence.”
“I think it’s bigger than evidence.”
Noah tugged Adrian’s sleeve.
“Dad?”
Adrian crouched.
“What?”
“Mom said you have to open it.”
Vanessa and Reed exchanged a look.
Adrian stared at the key.
“Then I’ll open it.”
Twenty minutes later, police surrounded the old bank discreetly.
No sirens.
No lights.
The front doors stood unlocked.
Adrian entered with Reed.
Vanessa remained outside with Noah under police protection.
The lobby was dark.
Old marble counters remained from another era.
“Thomas!” Adrian shouted.
No answer.
They crossed toward the elevator.
It opened automatically.
One button glowed.
B3.
The vault.
Reed drew his weapon.
“This is an invitation.”
Adrian stepped inside.
“I know.”
The elevator descended.
B1.
B2.
B3.
The doors opened.
A long corridor appeared.
At the end stood the vault.
And beside it—
Thomas Caldwell.
“Adrian.”
Adrian walked toward him.
“Where is Elias?”
Thomas smiled faintly.
“So Vanessa told you.”
“Where is he?”
“Closer than you think.”
Reed raised his badge.
“Thomas Caldwell, keep your hands where I can see them.”
Thomas laughed.
“You really brought the police?”
Then the lights went out.
Reed cursed.
A shot echoed.
Adrian dropped.
Emergency lights flickered red.
Thomas had disappeared.
“Reed?”
“I’m fine.”
They moved toward the vault.
Its enormous door stood open.
Inside were hundreds of deposit boxes.
Adrian found 317.
He inserted Noah’s key.
It turned.
The box opened.
Inside was no money.
No jewelry.
Only three objects.
A flash drive.
A sealed DNA report.
And a letter addressed:
ADRIAN — READ THIS BEFORE YOU TRUST THE TEST.
Adrian opened the letter.
Claire’s handwriting.
He read.
His face slowly changed.
“What?” Reed asked.
Adrian looked up.
“Claire says Noah’s DNA records were altered.”
“Altered by whom?”
Before Adrian could answer, a voice came from behind them.
“By me.”
They turned.
Elias Blackwood stood at the vault entrance.
Hands visible.
No weapon.
Reed aimed at him.
“Don’t move.”
Elias ignored the gun.
He looked directly at Adrian.
“You want to know who Noah’s father is?”
Adrian stared at him.
“Yes.”
Elias nodded toward the DNA report.
“Then burn that.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“Because Victor created it.”
“Why would he?”
“To make you believe Julian fathered Noah.”
Adrian stopped.
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Elias stepped closer.
“Because Julian Blackwood never slept with Claire.”
Silence swallowed the vault.
Adrian felt his pulse pounding.
“Claire said he did.”
“No.”
Elias’s eyes hardened.
“Claire lied to protect the man who actually fathered Noah.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Who?”
Elias looked at him for several seconds.
Then answered.
“My father.”
May you like
Victor Blackwood.
And suddenly the entire mystery changed.
