Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

“CLAIRE!”

Adrian took the stairs two at a time.

Behind him, Reed shouted for him to wait.

Adrian didn’t.

Three years.

Three years of waking up beside an empty pillow.

Three years of explaining to Noah why his mother would never walk through the front door again.

Three years of standing beside a grave that apparently contained a lie.

Then he heard her scream again.

“NOAH! GET DOWN!”

A gunshot exploded upstairs.

Adrian reached the landing.

A guard stepped from the shadows.

Adrian slammed him against the wall before the man could raise his weapon.

The gun hit the floor.

Elias appeared behind Adrian and kicked it away.

“Left corridor!”

Adrian ran.

At the end of the hallway, a door stood open.

Inside, Noah crouched behind an overturned table.

Victor stood near the window with a pistol.

And between them—

Claire.

Adrian stopped.

For one impossible second, the entire world became silent.

She was thinner.

Her hair was shorter.

A scar crossed the side of her forehead.

But it was Claire.

Alive.

Her eyes found his.

“Adrian…”

His knees nearly failed him.

Victor smiled.

“Touching.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

“Put the gun down.”

Victor pressed his pistol against Claire’s ribs.

“No.”

Noah stared at Adrian.

“Dad.”

“I’m here, buddy.”

“I knew you’d come.”

Adrian never looked away from Victor.

“Move away from them.”

Victor laughed softly.

“You still think you’re negotiating.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“I’m giving you the last instruction you’ll ever receive from me.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Footsteps sounded downstairs.

Police.

Victor heard them too.

“You brought law enforcement into my house?”

“You kidnapped my son.”

“I protected him.”

“From what?”

Victor looked at Claire.

“From the truth.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“Don’t.”

Adrian noticed.

“What truth?”

Victor smiled again.

“Ask your wife.”

Claire shook her head.

“Not here.”

“Why not?”

Victor’s eyes moved toward Noah.

“Because she knows what happens when the boy discovers what he really is.”

Noah stood.

“I’m his son.”

Victor looked at him.

“Yes.”

Then at Adrian.

“But not yours.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I already know.”

Victor blinked.

For the first time, genuine surprise crossed his face.

Claire stared at Adrian.

“You saw the drive?”

“Yes.”

“Then you know—”

“I know enough.”

Victor’s surprise became amusement.

“No. You don’t.”

Claire suddenly drove her elbow backward.

Victor grunted.

The gun moved away from her.

“NOW!”

Noah dove.

Adrian fired.

The bullet struck Victor’s shoulder.

Victor crashed against the window.

Claire ran toward Noah.

Adrian crossed the room and kicked Victor’s pistol away.

Victor lay against the wall, blood spreading across his shirt.

But he was laughing.

Adrian grabbed him.

“What’s funny?”

“You.”

Victor coughed.

“You think you won.”

Police flooded the room.

Reed shouted.

“Weapon down, Adrian!”

Adrian ignored him.

“Where have you kept Claire?”

Victor smiled through the pain.

“Ask her.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

She held Noah so tightly the boy could barely move.

Noah touched her face.

“Mom?”

Claire broke.

“Yes.”

“You’re really Mom?”

“Yes, baby.”

Noah began crying.

Claire kissed his forehead again and again.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah wrapped his arms around her neck.

Adrian watched them.

Everything inside him wanted to cross the room.

To hold her.

To demand answers.

To forgive her.

To hate her.

He didn’t know which emotion belonged first.

Reed pulled Victor upright.

“You’re under arrest.”

Victor looked at Adrian.

“You should go to the island.”

Adrian froze.

Victor continued.

“Find the nameless grave.”

Claire looked terrified.

“Victor, shut up.”

“You’ve hidden enough, Claire.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“Who is buried there?”

Claire said nothing.

“Claire.”

“Not here.”

Victor laughed.

“She still won’t tell you.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Tell me what?”

Claire looked toward Noah.

“Not in front of him.”

That was enough.

Adrian turned to Reed.

“Get Noah downstairs.”

“No!”

Noah tightened his arms around Claire.

“I’m not leaving Mom.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian crouched.

“Buddy, Detective Reed is going to take you downstairs. Your mom and I need to talk.”

Noah looked between them.

“You’re not going to leave her?”

The question destroyed Adrian.

“No.”

“You promise?”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“I promise.”

Noah slowly released her.

Reed took him downstairs.

Elias entered as officers dragged Victor away.

Victor stopped beside him.

“Still pretending you’re different from me?”

Elias stared at him.

“I am different.”

Victor leaned closer.

“Then why haven’t you told Adrian who Evelyn really is?”

Adrian turned.

Elias went still.

Victor smiled.

Another secret.

Of course.

“Take him,” Reed ordered.

Victor disappeared down the stairs.

Adrian turned toward Elias.

“What did he mean?”

Elias looked toward Evelyn, who had entered behind Vanessa.

Evelyn looked exhausted.

Claire stared at her.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

“I had no choice.”

Adrian looked between them.

“Someone starts talking now.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“My full name is Evelyn Blackwood Hart.”

Elias lowered his eyes.

Adrian felt the next truth coming.

He already hated it.

“My father,” Evelyn continued, “was Gabriel Blackwood.”

Elias whispered:

“The erased son.”

Adrian stared.

“The grave?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Gabriel’s grave.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Except Gabriel isn’t buried there.”

Adrian turned sharply.

“What?”

Claire looked at him.

“That grave was built to convince Victor that Gabriel was dead.”

“Why?”

“Because Gabriel knew what the Blackwoods were becoming. Money laundering. Judges. Police. Contractors. Political bribery. He tried to expose all of it.”

“And Victor?”

“Victor hunted him.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Where is Gabriel now?”

Evelyn’s silence answered before her words did.

“No one knows.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“And what does this have to do with Noah?”

Claire began trembling.

“Everything.”

Adrian waited.

She struggled to speak.

Then footsteps thundered from downstairs.

Reed appeared.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Victor’s transport was hit.”

Everyone froze.

“What do you mean hit?”

“Two vehicles intercepted the convoy.”

“Victor?”

“Gone.”

Elias cursed.

Reed continued.

“Three officers wounded.”

Adrian looked toward the windows.

Victor had planned this.

Of course he had.

Then Claire whispered:

“He’s going to the island.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he knows the drive was opened.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What’s on that island?”

Claire met his eyes.

“The only evidence Victor could never buy, threaten, or kill his way out of.”

Elias stepped closer.

“What evidence?”

Claire looked toward Evelyn.

Evelyn answered.

“Gabriel’s ledger.”

Adrian frowned.

“A financial ledger?”

“No.”

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“A list of every Blackwood crime for thirty-seven years.”

Reed went silent.

Claire continued.

“Names. Dates. murders disguised as accidents. Judges paid off. Witnesses disappeared.”

“And it’s on the island?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Inside the nameless grave.”

Adrian understood.

Victor wasn’t escaping.

He was cleaning the last piece of evidence.

Claire grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“If he destroys that ledger, he can rebuild everything.”

Adrian stared at her hand touching him.

Three years ago, he would have crossed fire for that hand.

Maybe he still would.

But there was one question that mattered more.

“You still haven’t told me who Noah’s father is.”

Claire slowly released him.

“Adrian…”

“No more secrets.”

“Please.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“You were dead for three years.”

Claire flinched.

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I watched our son cry himself to sleep asking for you.”

Tears rolled down Claire’s face.

“I know.”

“So don’t stand there and tell me to wait for another truth.”

Claire looked toward the doorway.

Noah was gone.

Safe downstairs.

Then she finally said:

“Gabriel Blackwood had a son.”

Elias frowned.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“My father said Gabriel only had Evelyn.”

“Victor lied.”

Adrian’s pulse accelerated.

Claire continued.

“Gabriel’s son changed his identity. He disappeared from the Blackwood world.”

“Who?”

Claire looked directly into Adrian’s eyes.

“You knew him.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“Who?”

“Michael Hart.”

Adrian stared.

The name belonged to a man from his childhood.

A mentor.

A family friend.

A man who died when Adrian was twenty.

Claire whispered:

“Michael Hart was Noah’s biological father.”

Adrian staggered backward.

“No.”

Claire cried.

“I’m sorry.”

“That’s impossible.”

“It isn’t.”

“Michael died fifteen years ago.”

Evelyn spoke quietly.

“No, Adrian.”

He turned.

Evelyn’s face was pale.

“That was another lie.”

Adrian felt the floor tilt beneath him.

“Michael Hart is alive.”

Claire whispered:

“And Victor has spent fifteen years trying to find him.”

Adrian looked at the people surrounding him.

Every answer had become another door.

Every door opened onto another lie.

Then Claire’s phone—an old phone recovered from the room—began ringing.

Unknown number.

Claire stared at it.

No one moved.

It rang again.

Adrian answered.

“Who is this?”

Silence.

Then a man spoke.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

A voice Adrian had not heard since he was twenty.

“Adrian?”

His blood went cold.

“Michael?”

Claire closed her eyes.

The voice continued.

“If Claire is alive, Victor failed.”

Adrian could barely speak.

“Where are you?”

“Going somewhere I should have gone a long time ago.”

Adrian already knew.

“Blackwood Island.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

A pause.

Then:

“Because Victor is coming for the ledger.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

Michael’s next words changed everything again.

“And because there’s something buried beside that grave that Claire never told you about.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Michael breathed slowly.

“The proof that Noah was never my son either.”

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Claire had gone completely white.

May you like

And for the first time since Adrian found her alive—

she looked more afraid of him than she did of Victor.
