Mara's attorney argued that Caroline had been Sophie's intended parent.
She had carried her.
Given birth.
Raised her.
Ryan and Emily hadn't known about the transfer.
How could they claim parenthood now?
Our attorney didn't deny Caroline's motherhood.
That wasn't the argument.
We weren't trying to erase Caroline.
We were asking the court to recognize what had happened.
Our embryo had been used without our consent.
Sophie had been deprived of knowledge about her biological family.
And Mara had endangered her.
The guardian ad litem focused on Sophie.
Not the clinic.
Not the money.
Not us.
Sophie.
Her safety.
Her attachment.
Her emotional stability.
Her wishes.
The judge made one statement that stayed with me.
“This child is not a disputed asset.”
Exactly.
Sophie wasn't something the adults had to win.
She was a six-year-old girl who needed somewhere safe to sleep.
The court allowed her placement with us to continue.
