Chapter 16 - CAROLINE'S LETTER Maya Trent gave us Caroline's letter after the legal issues surrounding her estate were resolved.
It wasn't a dramatic farewell.
It wasn't a secret message predicting her death.
It was simply Caroline trying to do the right thing.
She wrote:
My first priority is Sophie.
Then:
I do not want the genetic parents contacted until the clinic error is confirmed.
She had been afraid of destroying another family based on incomplete information.
Then came the line Emily couldn't stop reading.
They may have other children. Sophie must not be treated like evidence or property.
Caroline had feared that we would hate her.
She had done nothing wrong.
She hadn't known.
She had loved Sophie.
Then she had discovered the truth.
And instead of running from it, she had tried to protect everyone involved.
She never got the chance.
At the end of the letter, she had written:
Ryan Carter appears to be the genetic father. Emily Carter likely the genetic mother.
She had printed a family photograph.
She had shown it to Sophie.
“Those may be the people whose story helped make you.”
Sophie, being six, remembered only one word.
