Chapter 4 - THE DNA The DNA testing was performed through official channels.

No home kits.

No shortcuts.

No assumptions.

Emily and I provided samples.

Sophie provided hers.

Then we waited.

Those days were unbearable.

I found myself watching Sophie whenever she visited the hospital.

The way she tilted her head.

The way she frowned when thinking.

The shape of her eyes.

Every detail became evidence.

Yet I kept reminding myself that resemblance meant nothing.

A child was not a photograph.

A child was a person.

When the genetic counselor finally asked us to sit down, Emily grabbed my hand.

The results were overwhelming.

Sophie was biologically related to both of us.

The probability of paternity was extraordinarily high.

The maternal comparison was equally conclusive.

Sophie was our biological daughter.

Six years old.

Our daughter.

A child we had never known existed.

Emily covered her mouth.

I couldn't move.

For years, we had believed our family consisted of three people.

Ryan.

Emily.

Lily.

Now a fourth person had appeared.

Not from nowhere.

From a decision made years earlier by strangers.

A decision we had never authorized.

That night, I stood alone in the hospital hallway.

I thought about every birthday we had missed.

Every fever.

Every first word.

Every night she had been afraid.

Every time she had called another woman Mom.

And suddenly the word “daughter” no longer felt like biology.

It felt like grief.
