Chapter 1 - THE VIDEO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING“DAD, STOP! SHE DIDN’T DO IT!”

“DAD, STOP! SHE DIDN’T DO IT!”
The little girl’s scream cut through the mansion like shattered glass. Michael froze above the terrified housekeeper, one hand still pressed against the polished floor. Eight-year-old Lily stood several feet away, trembling violently, but she refused to lower the phone in her hand. On its glowing screen, a paused security recording showed the staircase.

“Lily… where did you get that?”

Michael’s voice suddenly sounded smaller. The fury that had driven him across the room disappeared as he stared at the screen. Claire, the housekeeper, slowly pushed herself upright, one hand touching her bruised shoulder. She said nothing. She simply looked at Michael with an expression more painful than anger: disappointment.

“Mom gave me the password before she left,” Lily whispered. “She told me if something bad happened, I should check the cameras.”

Michael’s face drained of color.

His wife, Vanessa, had supposedly left for a charity dinner almost two hours earlier. At least, that was what she had told him. Yet Lily pressed PLAY, and the security footage revealed something impossible. Vanessa appeared at the top of the glass staircase only twenty minutes ago.

She wasn’t alone.

Claire appeared next, carrying a folded blanket toward the nursery. Vanessa stepped behind her and grabbed her arm. There was no sound in the recording, but their body language told enough. Claire tried to pull away. Vanessa pointed furiously downstairs. Then, without warning, she shoved Claire toward the staircase railing.

Michael stopped breathing.

Claire had caught the glass rail at the last second.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

A shadow appeared behind Vanessa.

A man.

His face remained outside the camera angle, but Michael recognized the expensive gray coat immediately. He had seen it earlier that week, hanging inside his private office during a business meeting.

“That coat…” Michael whispered.

Claire looked directly at him.

“Your brother was wearing it.”

Michael turned toward her.

“Daniel?”

Before Claire could answer, every light inside the mansion suddenly went dark.

Lily screamed.

Michael grabbed his daughter and pulled her against his chest while Claire crawled toward them. Outside, the swimming pool lights remained glowing blue, meaning the neighborhood had electricity.

Someone had deliberately killed power inside the house.

Then footsteps sounded upstairs.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming toward the staircase.

And Michael realized the person who had tried to silence Claire might never have left the mansion.
