CHAPTER 18 — THE HOUSE WITH OPEN DOORS

“DROP THE GUN, DAD. IT ENDS WITH ME.”
Evelyn faced the man who had built Crown Zero before Richard ever created North Crown.
Her father had spent decades turning families into systems, children into successors, and secrets into weapons.
He believed legacy mattered more than love.
Evelyn had spent half her life running from that belief.
Now she stopped running.
Federal agents surrounded the server room.
Her father surrendered only after realizing every archive had already been copied.
By sunrise, Crown Zero was finished.
Not because its members suddenly became powerless, but because their greatest weapon—secrecy—was gone.
Weeks became months.
Trials began.
Hidden identities were restored.
Victims learned the truth.
Richard testified publicly about North Crown and accepted responsibility for the damage his choices had caused.
Evelyn returned to the mansion.
But Michael did not immediately call her Mom again.
Some wounds required time.
Evelyn understood.
Claire remained with the family, no longer as an employee but as someone Lily trusted and Michael had learned to respect.
One evening, Lily found Michael removing the final lock from the basement door.
“What are you doing?”
“Making sure nobody needs permission to enter.”
Lily smiled.
“So the house really has no secrets?”
Michael considered the question.
“No hidden rooms.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Michael laughed.
She was definitely his daughter.
“No,” he said. “People will always have private things. But nobody in this house gets to use secrets to control somebody else.”
Lily nodded.
“Good rule.”
That evening, Michael, Claire, Lily, Richard, and Evelyn ate dinner together.
It was awkward.
Imperfect.
Real.
Richard and Evelyn barely knew how to speak to each other after decades of deception.
But they tried.
For Michael, that mattered.
Later, Lily went upstairs.
Evelyn stood beside the front door.
“You know I may never be able to explain every choice I made.”
Michael nodded.
“Then don’t explain everything tonight.”
She looked at him.
“What should I do?”
“Stay.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
This time, she did.
Outside, the mansion windows glowed warmly against the darkness.
No hidden cameras.
No secret organization.
No locked basement waiting to expose another betrayal.
Michael finally believed the nightmare was over.
Then Lily called from upstairs.
“DAD?”
Michael smiled.
“What now?”
Her answer erased his smile.
“There’s someone outside my window.”
Everyone froze.
Michael ran upstairs.
Lily stood several feet from the glass.
Beyond the window, nobody was there.
Only a small envelope taped to the outside.
Police removed it safely.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Michael, Lily, Claire, Richard, and Evelyn eating dinner less than one hour earlier.
Someone had photographed them from inside the house.
On the back were five handwritten words:
CROWN ZERO WAS NEVER FIRST.
Michael stared into the dark hallway.
May you like
Then somewhere deep inside the mansion—
a floorboard creaked.
