CHAPTER 14 — EVELYN’S RETURN
“MICHAEL, GET DOWN!”
Evelyn shouted before the investigator could draw.
Claire slammed Michael behind a concrete pillar as Reed’s second officer tackled the armed man. A gunshot exploded through the station, shattering an overhead sign.
Evelyn ran toward them.
Michael barely recognized the older woman approaching him, yet every childhood memory recognized her movements.
The way she said his name.
The way her left hand trembled when frightened.
The tiny scar beside her eyebrow.
“Mom?”
Evelyn touched his face.
“I’m sorry.”
Michael stepped away.
Twenty years of grief crashed into twenty seconds of impossible reality.
“You were alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me bury you.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I let you survive me.”
Reed’s loyal investigator secured the traitor. The man refused to speak, but Evelyn recognized him.
“He works for Crown Zero.”
Michael stared at her.
“North Crown?”
“No. North Crown was only one branch.”
Evelyn explained that Richard had built North Crown believing he could control dangerous people by collecting their secrets. But years earlier, an older private network discovered Richard’s operation and quietly infiltrated it.
They called their leadership protocol Crown Zero.
Richard never knew.
“Why was my name marked FINAL EVALUATION?” Michael demanded.
Evelyn looked at him painfully.
“Because they weren’t evaluating you.”
She paused.
“They were evaluating Lily.”
Michael’s expression changed instantly.
“No one gets to turn my daughter into their legacy.”
“That,” Evelyn whispered, “is exactly why I finally came back.”
Then her phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went white.
A live security image showed Lily standing inside the mansion.
