Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD“WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?”

Michael’s voice echoed through the abandoned train terminal.

No answer came from the darkness.

Rain hammered the broken glass roof overhead.

The address Richard sent led to a freight station closed for nearly thirty years.

Michael stood alone on the platform.

At least, he appeared alone.

Detective Reed’s team surrounded the property from concealed positions.

Claire remained inside the command vehicle.

Michael wore no visible microphone.

Richard would check.

Instead, a transmitter had been sewn inside the lining of Michael’s coat.

“Dad!”

A light switched on.

Richard Hale stood across the tracks.

Alive.

Michael had seen him on security footage.

He had heard his voice.

None of that prepared him for seeing the man in person.

Seven years older.

Thinner.

Gray hair.

But unmistakably Richard.

Michael stepped down from the platform.

“Where’s Lily?”

“Safe.”

“I want to see her.”

“You will.”

“Now.”

Richard sighed.

“You always were impatient.”

“And you were always controlling.”

A faint smile.

“Also true.”

Michael stopped ten feet away.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Then Michael punched him.

Richard fell against a bench.

Police nearly moved in.

Reed ordered them to hold.

Richard wiped blood from his mouth.

“I deserved that.”

Michael grabbed his coat.

“You deserve worse.”

“I probably do.”

“Where is Lily?”

Richard looked toward the tunnel.

“She’s with someone I trust.”

“I trusted Vanessa.”

“So did I.”

Michael froze.

Richard’s regret appeared genuine.

“Vanessa changed,” he said.

“You recruited her.”

“Yes.”

“To spy on me.”

“To protect you.”

“Stop calling it protection!”

Michael’s voice cracked through the terminal.

“You stole my identity. You lied about my father. You faked your death. You let Vanessa into my marriage. You watched my daughter from inside my own house.”

Richard stared at him.

“I did terrible things.”

“That doesn’t answer anything.”

“No.”

Richard slowly sat.

“So ask.”

Michael wanted to hit him again.

Instead:

“Who is Jonathan Mercer?”

Richard’s face changed.

There it was.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Where did you hear that name?”

“Daniel.”

Richard cursed quietly.

“Is Mercer my father?”

Richard looked away.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

The word struck harder than Michael expected.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Did he create North Crown?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you take me?”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Because Jonathan was going to turn you into himself.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“I was three.”

“That was exactly the point.”

Richard explained.

Jonathan Mercer built financial systems for people who required secrecy.

Initially legal.

Then questionable.

Eventually criminal.

He discovered that information was more valuable than money.

Accounts became leverage.

Leverage became power.

North Crown was the eventual product of that philosophy.

“Your mother tried leaving him,” Richard said.

Michael listened silently.

“Jonathan wouldn’t allow it.”

“So she went to you?”

“To Nathan first.”

“My uncle.”

Richard nodded.

“Nathan helped her disappear. I helped create your new identity.”

“Why you?”

Richard looked at Michael.

“Because Evelyn trusted me.”

“Were you sleeping with my mother?”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

Michael believed him.

Strangely, that mattered.

“Then why raise me?”

Richard’s eyes softened.

“Because I loved her.”

Michael looked away.

“And because after she died, I loved you.”

The anger remained.

But something inside it shifted.

“You faked your death.”

“Mercer found me.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

Richard explained that the plane accident had been staged after an assassination attempt.

He disappeared to keep Mercer focused on him rather than Michael.

Michael laughed without humor.

“Meanwhile you planted Vanessa beside me.”

“I needed someone close.”

“You needed control.”

Richard didn’t argue.

“Yes.”

That admission silenced Michael momentarily.

“Where is Lily?”

Richard stood.

“Come with me.”

They entered the tunnel.

Reed’s team followed at a distance.

Michael descended beneath the abandoned station.

The tunnel eventually opened into an old maintenance room.

Lily sat on a cot.

She jumped up.

“Dad!”

Michael ran to her.

He dropped to his knees and held her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Did anyone touch you?”

“No.”

“Did Grandpa scare you?”

Lily glanced at Richard.

“A little.”

Richard almost looked offended.

Lily added:

“He makes terrible sandwiches.”

Despite everything, Michael laughed.

One short, broken laugh.

Then Claire entered with Reed.

Richard immediately stiffened.

“You brought police.”

Michael stood.

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“I saved her.”

“You don’t get to decide the difference.”

Reed approached.

“Richard Hale, put your hands where I can see them.”

Richard complied.

Then every radio in the room erupted with static.

Reed turned.

“What the hell?”

The tunnel lights went out.

Lily grabbed Michael.

Emergency lights activated.

A voice came through hidden speakers.

Older.

Calm.

Unfamiliar.

“Richard.”

Richard’s face turned white.

Michael knew immediately.

Mercer.

Jonathan Mercer.

His biological father.

The voice continued.

“You always did confuse possession with love.”

Richard looked upward.

“Jonathan!”

Michael pulled Lily behind him.

“Where are you?”

Mercer laughed softly.

“Closer than your police friends would prefer.”

Gunfire erupted somewhere in the tunnel.

Reed pushed everyone down.

Officers shouted.

Michael covered Lily with his body.

Then the speakers came alive again.

“Michael.”

He froze.

The first time his biological father had spoken his name.

“I’ve waited twenty-seven years.”

Michael looked toward Richard.

“You want me? Come out.”

Mercer laughed.

“Still brave when frightened. That part is Evelyn.”

Richard shouted:

“Leave him alone!”

“You stole him.”

“I saved him!”

“You stole my son!”

The sound cut out.

Then an explosion shook the tunnel.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Reed yelled for evacuation.

Michael grabbed Lily.

Claire took her other hand.

They ran.

Richard remained behind.

Michael turned.

“Dad!”

Richard looked at him.

It was the first time Michael had called him that since discovering the truth.

Richard heard it too.

Something crossed his face.

Then he pointed toward the exit.

“GO!”

Michael hesitated.

Richard shouted:

“TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER AND GO!”

Another explosion.

The ceiling partially collapsed between them.

“DAD!”

Richard disappeared behind dust.

Michael tried running back.

Reed stopped him.

“You’ll die!”

“He’s in there!”

“So is Mercer!”

Michael fought him.

Then Lily screamed:

“Dad, please!”

Michael stopped.

His daughter was crying.

He chose her.

They escaped seconds before another section collapsed.

Outside, rain poured across the abandoned tracks.

Emergency vehicles surrounded the terminal.

Michael held Lily beneath his coat.

Claire stood beside them.

Reed ordered rescue teams toward the tunnel.

Then Michael’s phone vibrated.

A text.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

A photograph appeared.

Richard was alive.

Kneeling.

Blood on his face.

Behind him stood a man.

Jonathan Mercer.

For the first time, Michael saw his biological father clearly.

The resemblance was undeniable.

A message followed:
