Chapter 10 - NORTH CROWN“IF I GIVE MERCER WHAT HE WANTS, RICHARD WALKS OUT ALIVE.”

Detective Reed stared at Michael across the conference table.

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

Michael placed his phone down.

“But I know what Mercer wants.”

Claire stood near the window.

Lily was asleep in a protected room with two officers outside.

Nobody had slept properly in thirty hours.

The photograph of Richard remained on Michael’s screen.

Mercer had sent one additional message.

BRING THE NORTH CROWN MASTER KEY.

Michael initially assumed he meant the encrypted device Daniel stole.

He was wrong.

That key only controlled Michael’s corporate reserve account.

Mercer wanted something older.

Something Richard had hidden.

Michael remembered Evelyn’s recording.

The photograph.

The basement.

Then Lily supplied the missing piece.

“Grandpa gave me a key.”

Everyone turned.

Michael crouched.

“When?”

“When he took me.”

“Where is it?”

Lily reached beneath her shirt.

A small gold pendant hung from a chain.

Michael had assumed it was jewelry.

It wasn’t.

The pendant opened.

Inside rested a tiny storage chip.

Reed stared.

“Richard gave you this?”

Lily nodded.

“He said Daddy would know what to do.”

Michael almost laughed.

“Grandpa gives me too much credit.”

Claire knelt beside them.

“Maybe he knew you’d ask for help.”

That mattered.

Old Michael would have acted alone.

Old Michael would have charged into danger because action felt stronger than uncertainty.

That mistake had nearly destroyed Claire.

He would not repeat it.

Reed’s forensic team opened the chip inside an isolated system.

Encrypted folders appeared.

Thousands.

Bank accounts.

Property records.

Corporate registrations.

Photographs.

Audio files.

Names.

Michael stared.

“This is North Crown.”

Reed nodded slowly.

“Not the company.”

Claire understood.

“The archive.”

North Crown’s real power wasn’t money.

It was information.

Mercer had spent decades documenting everyone who used his network.

Criminals.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Fixers.

Officials.

Every secret became insurance.

Every payment became leverage.

Michael looked sick.

“My father built this.”

“Your biological father,” Claire said gently.

Michael looked at her.

“Richard is my father.”

The answer came automatically.

Claire said nothing.

Michael realized he meant it.

Whatever Richard had done, whatever lies remained between them, biology had not replaced twenty-seven years.

Reed copied the archive to protected evidence servers.

Then Michael recorded a message for Mercer.

“You want the master key? You’ll get it. Richard walks first.”

Mercer responded within minutes.

An address arrived.

North Crown Holdings.

Not a shell office.

A physical property.

An abandoned luxury hotel outside the city.

Michael recognized it.

Richard had taken him there as a child before construction stopped.

At midnight, Michael entered alone.

This time, truly alone.

Police surrounded the wider area but Mercer had warned that visible intervention would kill Richard.

Michael carried the pendant.

The hotel lobby remained strangely beautiful beneath decades of dust.

A chandelier hung above cracked marble.

Then slow applause came from the balcony.

Jonathan Mercer appeared.

Michael stared at the man who gave him life.

Mercer descended.

“You look like Evelyn.”

Michael said nothing.

“More every year.”

“Where’s Richard?”

Mercer smiled.

“No hello for your father?”

“My father is Richard.”

The smile disappeared.

“Interesting.”

“Where is he?”

Mercer led Michael into the ballroom.

Richard sat tied to a chair.

Bruised.

Alive.

He looked up.

“Michael, don’t give him anything.”

Mercer sighed.

“Richard has always been theatrical.”

Michael held up the pendant.

“You want this?”

Mercer’s eyes changed.

“Yes.”

“Release him.”

“First the key.”

“First Richard.”

Mercer smiled.

“You negotiate like me.”

“That’s not a compliment.”

For the first time, anger appeared in Mercer’s face.

“You know nothing about me.”

“I know enough.”

“You know Richard’s version.”

“I know my mother ran from you.”

Mercer went still.

Michael continued.

“I know Nathan helped her.”

“Nathan betrayed me.”

“I know Richard gave me a new identity.”

“He stole you.”

“I know you built a system around secrets and fear.”

Mercer stepped closer.

“I built something that could survive.”

“You built a cage.”

Mercer stared.

Then smiled again.

“Evelyn used that exact word.”

Michael felt pain in his chest.

“What happened to her?”

Richard suddenly shouted:

“Michael!”

Mercer turned.

Too late.

Michael saw it.

The truth in Richard’s panic.

“You killed her.”

Mercer’s expression became unreadable.

Michael stepped forward.

“Did you kill my mother?”

Mercer said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Michael lunged.

Mercer’s guards caught him.

Richard screamed.

Mercer calmly straightened Michael’s jacket.

“Evelyn made a choice.”

“You killed her!”

“She tried giving my archive to federal investigators.”

Michael fought against the guards.

“You murdered her!”

“I protected what I built.”

Michael’s grief became something colder than rage.

He stopped struggling.

Mercer mistook it for surrender.

“Give me the key.”

Michael looked at Richard.

Richard shook his head.

Michael handed Mercer the pendant.

Mercer smiled.

Then inserted the chip into a laptop.

ACCESS DENIED.

His smile vanished.

He tried again.

ACCESS DENIED.

“What did you do?”

Michael looked at him.

“Nothing.”

Mercer’s eyes narrowed.

Then a countdown appeared.

DATA TRANSMISSION COMPLETE.

Reed’s team had already copied everything.

The chip was merely a trigger confirming Mercer physically possessed stolen evidence.

Mercer understood.

“You brought police.”

Michael smiled faintly.

“No.”

Sirens erupted outside.

“I brought consequences.”

Mercer grabbed a gun.

Richard threw himself sideways, knocking Mercer’s arm.

The shot shattered a mirror.

Michael tackled Mercer.

Guards ran.

Police breached the hotel.

The ballroom exploded into shouting.

Michael and Mercer crashed across the marble.

Mercer struck him.

Michael hit back.

Then Mercer reached for the gun.

Richard kicked it away.

Reed entered.

“DON’T MOVE!”

Mercer froze.

For several seconds, father and son stared at each other.

Then Mercer laughed.

“You think this ends with me?”

Michael stood.

“No.”

Police cuffed Mercer.

Michael looked at the archive uploading across Reed’s tablet.

“It ends with the truth.”

Richard was freed.

Michael approached him.

Neither spoke.

Then Richard said:

“I’m sorry.”

Michael nodded.

“I know.”

“I lied to you your entire life.”

“Yes.”

“I thought keeping you ignorant kept you safe.”

“It didn’t.”

“No.”

Richard looked toward Lily’s photograph on Michael’s phone.

“You became a better father than I was.”

Michael shook his head.

“I nearly destroyed an innocent woman because I didn’t listen.”

“But you changed.”

Michael looked toward Claire standing at the ballroom entrance.

Their eyes met.

Then Reed approached.

“There’s a problem.”

Michael almost laughed.

“Of course there is.”

Reed held up his tablet.

“One folder in the North Crown archive opened automatically when Mercer was arrested.”

“What’s inside?”

“A list.”

“Of what?”

Reed turned the screen.

Michael read the heading.

SUCCESSION CANDIDATES.

There were twelve names.

Eleven had been marked deceased.

Only one remained active.

MICHAEL COLE / MICHAEL HALE.

Status:

READY.

Michael stared.

May you like

Then another line appeared beneath his name.

FINAL EVALUATION: LILY HALE.
