Chapter 40 - Footsteps Beyond the Door Years later, Lily stood alone inside the Open Door Center after sunset.

Chicago glittered beyond the windows.

Ethan was grown.

Isabella had rebuilt her life.

Victor carried no gun.

No bodyguards.

No empire.

The old recorder rested inside a glass case.

Beside it hung a simple sentence:

EVERY CHILD DESERVES A DOOR THAT OPENS.

Lily switched off the hallway lights.

Darkness surrounded her.

She wasn't afraid anymore.

Then came footsteps.

Slow.

Unfamiliar.

Lily stopped.

Someone stood outside the locked front door.

A young woman.

Maybe twenty-two.

Rain covered her coat.

She held a little girl against her chest.

The child's face was bruised.

The woman looked over her shoulder as though someone might be following her.

Then she saw Lily through the glass.

“Please,” she whispered.

Lily unlocked the door.

The woman entered.

“Are you Lily Carter?”

“Yes.”

Tears filled the stranger's eyes.

“My employer said you couldn't help me.”

Lily looked at the frightened child.

Then at the darkness outside.

“What's your employer's name?”

The woman hesitated.

When she finally whispered it, Lily stopped breathing.

Blackwood.

Behind her, another set of headlights appeared at the end of the street.

A black vehicle slowed.

Lily reached for her phone.

Twenty years earlier, she had been a frightened nanny crawling across a marble floor while a powerful woman told her nobody would believe her.

Tonight was different.

Lily locked the door behind the young mother.

Then she switched the recorder on.

A tiny red light appeared in the darkness.

“Start from the beginning.”

Outside, the black vehicle stopped.

The driver's door opened.

Lily stared through the glass.

And smiled—not because she wasn't afraid.

Because this time, fear would not decide what happened next.

Somewhere upstairs, the old building creaked.

Rain struck the windows.

The little girl tightened her arms around her mother.

And beyond the door, footsteps began moving toward them.

The first story had ended years ago.

But another door had just opened.

THE END… OR PERHAPS, THE BEGINNING.
