Chapter 14 - The Raid on the Bahnhofstrasse Vaults

At 8:00 a.m. Central European Time the following morning, four unmarked tactical transports escorted by the Swiss Federal Banking Police pulled up outside the monolithic limestone facade of Banque Privée Helvetia on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich.

Leading the multinational enforcement team was Senior Federal Investigator Marcus Reed, accompanied by Swiss Federal Inspector Henrik Weber and four armed tactical officers from the Cantonal Police.

They bypassed the ornate marble lobby, taking the private brass hydraulic elevator four levels beneath the street into the subterranean bedrock vaults.

Inside a sprawling, wood-paneled executive depository suite sat sixty-year-old Beatrix Vance-Sterling—Richard’s estranged wife and the firm’s chief European compliance officer—frantically feeding master bond certificates and ledger disks into an industrial cross-cut shredding console.

BOOM!

The reinforced double steel blast doors were breached using digital hydraulic override tools.

"SWISS FEDERAL POLICE! STEP AWAY FROM THE CONSOLE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!"

Beatrix gasped, dropping a stack of gold-sealed bearer shares onto the parquet floor, throwing her trembling, ring-draped hands into the air as cantonal officers secured the room in seconds flat.

Inspector Weber connected an encrypted Department of Justice cryptographic hardware token into the central terminal:

BEEP-CHIRP.

The terminal monitors flashed bright emerald green:

[ACCESS CONFIRMED — SOVEREIGN MATRILINEAL OVERRIDE — $62,800,000.00 RECOVERED — 100% TRANSFERRED TO THE CLARA BENNETT FOUNDATION].

Inspector Weber walked over to the desk, pulling three heavy, leather-bound deed books dating back to 1968 from the safe:

"The foreign accounts are completely liquidated, Mr. Reed," Inspector Weber announced over his encrypted satellite link to San Diego. "Every cent stolen by the Vance-Sterling syndicate has been repatriated to the sovereign foundation."

At the Rancho Santa Fe estate, Arthur Vance Senior lowered his satellite receiver, looking across the terrace table at Leo and me with deep, sovereign satisfaction.

"The foreign ledger is balanced, children," Arthur rumbled softly. "Now let us prepare for the grand assembly in San Francisco."
