Chapter 19 - The Trial’s Final Gavel in Department 3B

One year after the morning Richard Vance arrived with process servers at our nursery gates, the federal criminal trial of The United States versus Richard Vance, Beatrix Vance, and Bradley Vance-Croft reached its dramatic, historic conclusion in Courtroom 3B of the Edward J. Schwartz United States Courthouse in downtown San Diego.
Chief United States District Judge Eleanor Bradley took the elevated bench, slamming her heavy oak gavel down with a sharp, resonant CRACK.
"In the matter of Richard Vance," Judge Bradley announced, her authoritative voice commanding total, suffocating silence across the stone chamber. "On the charges of Transnational Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud in excess of sixty-two million dollars, Falsification of International Maritime Charters, Aggravated Extortion, and Operating an Unlawful Shadow Syndicate under the RICO Act, this court sentences you to Thirty-Two Years at the ADX Florence Supermax Facility in Colorado, without eligibility for early parole, probation, or compassionate release, and orders full financial restitution of sixty-two million, eight hundred thousand dollars."
Richard Vance broke down into ragged, silent wails, burying his cuffed face in his trembling hands.
"Beatrix Vance," the judge continued, turning her blazing, withering gaze onto the co-conspirator. "For international money laundering, destroying subpoenaed corporate evidence, and suborning criminal perjury, you are sentenced to Twenty-Four Years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville."
"Bradley Vance-Croft," Judge Bradley concluded. "For corporate racketeering, suborning domestic extortion, and fabricating fraudulent legal instruments while on federal pre-trial release, you are sentenced to Thirty-Five Years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute."
BANG.
The sound of the heavy wooden gavel struck the bench like an iron tombstone sealing a crypt forever.
Two armed federal marshals hauled the three convicts to their feet, dragging them backward through the reinforced steel holding doors into the cold reality of their multi-decade prison sentences where their greed, vanity, and cruelty would rot in the dark forever.
Outside on the sunlit courthouse steps overlooking Broadway, Arthur Vance Senior, Special Agent Marcus Cole, Chief Operator Rocco, Leo, our daughter Eleanor, and I stood before a sea of international financial and news cameras.
I stood tall in an exquisite royal-emerald tailored wool overcoat, holding Leo’s hand firmly in mine, looking directly into the camera lenses with a calm, fearless, radiant smile.

Leo stepped to the microphone bank, wrapping his arm securely around my shoulders, and delivered a single, powerful message to the watching world:
"Cruelty and pride believe that when a family possesses great wealth, an honest wife can be discarded like garbage in the dark. They believe that power belongs to those who hide behind foreign banks and forged covenants. But a loyal marriage built on honor, sovereign justice, and the unyielding protection of truth is an unbreakable fortress that will always conquer the night."
