Chapter 5 - The Medical Sanctuary at Carolinas Medical Center

By 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, the VIP surgical recovery suite on the eighth floor of Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center was secured under federal protective jurisdiction.

Dr. Paul Sterling, accompanied by two senior obstetric trauma surgeons, personally re-examined my incision beneath the shadowless examination lights.

With gentle, meticulous care, Dr. Sterling replaced the damaged surgical staples, cleansed the wound with antimicrobial irrigation, and applied a specialized vacuum-assisted wound closure system to ensure complete tissue regeneration.

Leo sat in the leather armchair beside my bed, holding my right hand between both of his palms, never letting go for a single second.

His tailored suit was gone; he wore a soft gray cashmere sweater and dark trousers. His eyes were red-rimmed with exhaustion, but the terrifying permafrost had melted, replaced by a deep, sacred devotion that filled every corner of the room.

"The internal sutures held firm, Leo," Dr. Sterling announced, his weathered face softening into an expression of profound, grandfatherly relief. "The emergency surgery was successful. There is zero residual internal hemorrhage. Clara’s ovarian reserves were preserved, and with complete physical rest, she will make a full, uncompromised recovery."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, tears of pure, unburdened peace spilling over my eyelashes.

Leo rose from his chair, leaning over the gurney, burying his face gently into the crook of my neck. His broad shoulders trembled as he wept silent, cleansing tears against my skin.

"I’m so sorry, Clara," Leo whispered, his voice thick with unpayable repentance. "I was blind. I was chasing corporate contracts across the world, telling myself I was building an empire for us, while monsters were torturing you in your own home. If I had lost you on Tuesday... my life would have ended."

I raised my trembling hand, my fingers gently tangling into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer until our foreheads rested together.

"You came back, Leo," I murmured softly, looking straight into his slate-gray eyes. "You caught the skillet. You stood between me and the dark. The nightmare is over."

The door to the private suite clicked open softly.

Arthur Vance Senior walked inside, his silver-headed walking cane resting lightly against his palm, carrying a silver tray with two fresh porcelain mugs of black hazelnut coffee.

"Drink your coffee, children," Arthur rumbled softly, his gravelly baritone warm with eternal family pride. "Because tomorrow morning, we foreclose on Agnes’s secret offshore vaults."
