Chapter 12 - Counter-Strike

Before Miller could give the order to fire, a blinding flash illuminated the night sky.

Marcus had brought backup. From the rooftop of a neighboring building, an anti-material round shattered the helicopter’s tail rotor with a deafening crack. The aircraft spun wildly out of control, its searchlight swinging wildly across the clouds before the pilot pulled up in a desperate emergency climb, retreating into the storm clouds.

"Move! Down the west stairwell!" Marcus screamed into the earpieces.

Sarah and David bolted across the slick rooftop, sliding through the fire door just as Miller’s ground forces breached the upper landing. They raced down the interior steps, taking three at a time, until they burst out into the rear freight alley where Marcus was waiting at the wheel of a battered armored delivery van.

"Get in!" Marcus yelled, kicking open the passenger door.

As David threw himself into the back, Sarah jumped into the front seat, grabbing the wheel as Marcus slammed his foot on the accelerator. The van clipped a parked police cruiser, sending sparks flying through the alley as they burst onto 10th Avenue.

"Where’s Leo?" Sarah demanded, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Safe with Agent Ramirez at a location outside the city," Marcus grunted, clutching his bleeding shoulder. "But we just kicked a hornets' nest. Eleanor isn't going to hide. She’s going to war."
