Chapter 1 - THE FALL “YOU DROPPED MY SON!”

“YOU DROPPED MY SON!”
The accusation exploded through the marble hall before Elena Torres had even caught her breath.
She was still on her knees beneath the sweeping staircase, both arms locked protectively around the six-month-old baby pressed against her chest. Her dark-blue nanny uniform was twisted at one shoulder. One stocking had torn across the knee when she hit the polished floor. Her palms burned from the impact, but she barely felt them.
All she could feel was the baby breathing.
That tiny movement against her chest was everything.
“Mr. Bennett, no!” Elena gasped. “I saved him!”
Daniel Bennett stood several feet away in a charcoal suit and loosened black tie, staring at her with an expression she had never seen before. He was usually controlled, almost unnervingly so. Tonight, however, terror had stripped the discipline from his face.
His son had almost died.
And Daniel believed Elena had caused it.
Above them, the Bennett estate rose in layers of glass, stone, and carefully engineered luxury. The main hall was two stories high, crowned by a modern chandelier whose warm light scattered across the white marble. A broad staircase climbed toward the second-floor gallery, where transparent glass railings overlooked the room.
That was where the baby had fallen from.
Only seconds earlier, Elena had been crossing the foyer when she heard a sound from above.
Not a scream.
Not even a cry.
A sharp intake of breath.
Elena looked up.
Vivian Bennett stood behind the glass railing in a flowing ivory dress, her elegant figure framed by the golden light of the upstairs corridor.
And baby Noah was leaving her hands.
For one impossible fraction of a second, Elena's mind refused to understand what her eyes were seeing.
Then gravity took him.
“No!”
She ran.
Her shoes struck marble. She threw herself forward without thinking about what would happen if she missed.
She caught Noah inches above the floor.
The impact drove the air from her lungs.
Now Daniel was standing over her, having entered through the front doors at precisely the wrong second. He had seen Elena sprawled on the floor.
He had seen his baby in her arms.
He had not seen what happened before that.
“Give him to me,” Daniel demanded.
Elena looked up.
“Sir—”
“Give me my son.”
Something in his voice frightened her more than shouting would have.
She carefully lifted Noah toward him.
Daniel took the child and immediately examined his head, arms, and tiny fingers. Noah began crying harder, frightened by the sudden movement and the tension surrounding him.
Daniel pressed his son against his chest.
“You're fired.”
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
“I said you're fired.”
“Daniel!”
The voice came from upstairs.
Vivian appeared at the top of the staircase.
Her hand rested against the glass railing.
Her face was pale.
“What happened?”
Elena slowly turned toward her.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Elena understood.
Vivian was going to lie.
“I don't know,” Vivian whispered, descending several steps. “I heard Noah screaming, and when I came out…”
She looked toward Elena.
Her expression changed perfectly.
Confusion.
Then horror.
“Elena had him.”
Elena felt cold.
“You know exactly what happened.”
Vivian stopped.
Daniel looked between them.
“What does that mean?”
“She—”
“Dad!”
A girl's voice sliced through the confrontation.
Everyone turned.
Fourteen-year-old Lily Bennett came running from the hallway in a beige top and faded jeans. Daniel's daughter from his first marriage was barefoot, her long brown hair falling messily around her shoulders.
Her face was white with fear.
“Lily, go upstairs,” Daniel said.
“No.”
“Now.”
“Dad, you have to watch something.”
“This isn't the time.”
“Yes, it is!”
Lily rushed toward the wall-mounted smart security screen beside the hallway entrance.
Vivian's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Elena saw it.
So did Lily.
The girl touched the screen.
“Dad,” she whispered. “Dad. Watch this.”
Daniel approached.
Security footage appeared.
Black and white.
Silent.
Time-stamped.
The upstairs gallery came into view.
Vivian was standing beside Noah.
Daniel's breathing stopped.
On the screen, Vivian looked behind her.
Then she lifted the baby.
And extended her arms over the railing.
“No…” Daniel whispered.
Elena watched his face rather than the footage.
The certainty disappeared first.
Then the anger.
Then something far worse replaced both.
Understanding.
On-screen, Vivian released Noah.
Daniel stumbled backward.
“No.”
Vivian began retreating toward the staircase.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
He turned.
For the first time that evening, Vivian looked genuinely afraid.
Daniel's voice became almost inaudible.
“You dropped my son.”
“It's not what you think.”
“I just watched you do it.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then make me understand.”
Vivian glanced toward the front doors.
Elena noticed.
“Don't let her leave.”
Vivian suddenly ran.
Daniel moved after her, but Lily screamed.
“Dad!”
He stopped immediately.
Lily pointed at the screen again.
“There’s more.”
Daniel looked back.
The recording had continued.
Three minutes before Vivian entered the gallery, another person appeared on the upstairs camera.
A man.
He wore a baseball cap pulled low over his face.
He handed Vivian something.
Then pointed toward Noah's nursery.
Daniel stared at the stranger.
Elena felt the hairs rise along her arms.
“Who is that?” she whispered.
Daniel didn't answer.
Because the stranger had turned toward the camera for half a second.
And Daniel recognized him.
His face went completely still.
“No.”
Lily looked at her father.
“You know him?”
Daniel continued staring at the screen.
Twenty years of memories seemed to pass behind his eyes.
Finally, he whispered the name.
“Marcus.”
Elena frowned.
“Who is Marcus?”
Daniel looked toward the staircase where Vivian had disappeared.
May you like
“My brother.”
And somewhere above them, a door quietly slammed.
