Chapter 4 - THE KEY RACHEL LEFT BEHIND The silver key opened a safe-deposit box registered under Rachel's maiden name.

The silver key opened a safe-deposit box registered under Rachel's maiden name.
By sunrise, Detective Cole had secured a warrant.

Inside the box were photographs, bank records, handwritten notes, and a small digital recorder.

But one object immediately caught Daniel's attention.

A birth certificate.

He picked it up.

The father's name was blank.

The mother's name was Rachel Bennett.

The child had been born eight years earlier.

Six months before Rachel died.

Daniel read the baby's name twice.

EMILY ROSE BENNETT.

His knees nearly gave way.

“I had another daughter.”

Detective Cole said nothing.

Daniel looked at Lily.

She was crying.

“Mom had another baby?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't know.”

Elena stood beside them holding Noah.

The mystery had changed again.

Rachel had hidden a pregnancy.

A birth.

A child.

Why?

Daniel pressed play on the recorder.

Rachel's voice filled the vault.

“If you're hearing this, something happened to me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Seven years disappeared.

He could almost smell Rachel's perfume.

Almost hear her laughing in their kitchen.

The recording continued.

“Daniel, I'm sorry. I couldn't tell you. Your father made me promise.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“He discovered Marcus was alive.”

Rachel explained that Marcus had returned secretly years after his supposed death. But Marcus was not the greatest danger.

Someone inside Bennett Technologies had been moving millions through shell companies.

Rachel discovered the transfers accidentally.

She began investigating.

Then she became pregnant.

Daniel listened in stunned silence.

The baby was his.

Emily was his daughter.

But Rachel received threats.

Photographs of Lily appeared in her mailbox.

Someone warned that both children would die if Rachel told Daniel what she had discovered.

So Daniel's father arranged a secret adoption.

Emily disappeared into another family.

Rachel planned to expose everything afterward.

She never got the chance.

The recording ended with one sentence.

“Daniel, trust the person everyone overlooks.”

Elena looked down.

Daniel turned toward her.

“The person everyone overlooks.”

The nanny.

The employee.

The person standing quietly in rooms where wealthy people assumed she wasn't listening.

Daniel suddenly remembered Elena's first day at the estate.

Rachel's father had recommended her.

Coincidence?

“Elena.”

She looked uncomfortable.

“What aren't you telling me?”

Elena remained silent.

“Elena.”

“My mother knew Rachel.”

Daniel stared at her.

“How?”

“She worked for your father.”

“Doing what?”

“Housekeeping.”

The answer landed heavily.

“My mother helped Rachel hide Emily.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Daniel stepped backward.

“You knew I had another daughter?”

“No.”

“Then what did you know?”

“That Rachel was protecting a child.”

“Where is Emily?”

Elena shook her head.

“My mother died four years ago. She never told me.”

Daniel looked at the birth certificate.

Somewhere in America, his daughter was alive.

Eight years old.

Possibly unaware of who she really was.

Detective Cole examined Rachel's records.

Then she found a photograph.

A little girl stood outside a farmhouse.

Brown hair.

Blue eyes.

Approximately eight years old.

On the back was an address.

Vermont.

Daniel looked at Cole.

“We're going.”

But the detective was staring at something else.

A second photograph.

It showed Charles Voss.

Daniel's father's attorney.

Standing beside Marcus.

The photograph was dated three months after Marcus had supposedly died.

Daniel felt rage spread through him.

Charles had known.

For eleven years.

Daniel immediately called him.

No answer.

Cole contacted officers.

Charles Voss's house was empty.

His car was gone.

Then Elena's phone vibrated.

A text message.

Unknown sender.

DON'T GO TO VERMONT.

Another followed.

THE GIRL ISN'T SAFE IF DANIEL COMES.

Daniel stared at it.

“Marcus.”

“No,” Elena said.

“How do you know?”

She showed him the final message.

BECAUSE MARCUS DOESN'T KNOW WHERE SHE IS.

Daniel looked at her.

“Then who sent it?”

Elena's phone rang.

She answered cautiously.

A woman's voice spoke.

“Elena?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Grace Miller.”

Daniel recognized the surname from the Vermont address.

Grace continued.

“I think I'm raising Daniel Bennett's daughter.”
