Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE GLASS “LOCK THE HOUSE!”

“LOCK THE HOUSE!”
Daniel's command thundered through the foyer.
Within seconds, the Bennett estate transformed from a luxurious family home into something resembling a fortress. Electronic locks engaged. Exterior gates closed. Security lights illuminated the long driveway stretching through the wooded property outside Greenwich, Connecticut.
But Vivian Bennett had disappeared.
Daniel handed Noah back to Elena.
This time, his hands trembled.
“Take him somewhere safe.”
Elena hesitated.
Only minutes earlier, this man had accused her of attempting to kill his child.
Now his eyes held something different.
Shame.
“I'll protect him,” Elena said quietly.
Daniel swallowed.
“I know.”
Those two words carried an apology he was not yet capable of speaking.
Lily stood beside the security screen.
“Dad, who's Marcus?”
Daniel did not immediately answer.
Marcus Bennett was his older brother.
And officially, Marcus Bennett had been dead for eleven years.
At least, that was what Daniel had believed.
Eleven years earlier, Marcus had disappeared after his car plunged through a guardrail during a winter storm outside Albany. The vehicle had been recovered from an icy river.
Marcus's body never had been.
Police eventually declared him dead.
Daniel inherited their father's technology company.
He inherited the family estate.
He inherited responsibilities Marcus had spent his entire life expecting would someday belong to him.
And apparently, Daniel had inherited his brother's hatred as well.
“Stay with Elena,” Daniel told Lily.
“I'm not five.”
“Tonight you are.”
Lily's eyes filled with anger.
“My little brother almost died because everyone keeps telling me to leave the room whenever something important happens.”
Daniel stared at her.
The sentence struck harder than she intended.
Lily had already lost one mother.
Daniel suddenly realized how close she had come to losing her brother.
“All right,” he said. “Stay where I can see you.”
He returned to the security panel.
The footage showed Marcus entering through a service corridor at 7:41 p.m.
That should have been impossible.
Every exterior entrance required biometric authorization.
Daniel rewound the recording.
Marcus approached a service door.
It opened before he touched it.
Someone inside the house had granted him access.
Elena watched over Daniel's shoulder.
“Someone helped him.”
“Yes.”
“Vivian?”
Daniel shook his head.
“She was upstairs.”
Lily leaned closer.
“Then somebody else is here.”
The three of them went silent.
The enormous house suddenly felt different.
Every corridor became a hiding place.
Every closed door became a question.
Then Noah began crying.
Elena looked down.
“It's okay, sweetheart.”
She rocked him gently.
Daniel watched her.
Her knee was bleeding.
There was a bruise forming along her forearm where she had hit the floor.
And still, she was comforting his son.
Daniel felt sick.
“Elena.”
She looked at him.
“I was wrong.”
She said nothing.
“I saw you on the floor and assumed…”
“You assumed the employee was guilty.”
Daniel flinched.
Elena's voice remained calm.
“You didn't ask what happened. You didn't ask why I was bleeding. You didn't even ask Lily what she saw.”
“I know.”
“No, Mr. Bennett. You know now.”
The words hurt because they were true.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I am sorry.”
Elena studied him for several seconds.
“Protect your children first. Apologize later.”
Daniel nodded.
Then something sounded upstairs.
A floorboard.
Everyone looked toward the balcony.
“Stay here.”
Daniel started toward the staircase.
Elena grabbed his sleeve.
“You don't know who's up there.”
“That's exactly why I'm going.”
He climbed.
Each step seemed unnaturally loud.
At the top, Vivian's ivory dress lay abandoned beside the railing.
Daniel stared at it.
She had changed clothes.
He followed the corridor toward their bedroom.
The door stood open.
Inside, drawers had been pulled out.
Jewelry boxes lay overturned.
A suitcase was missing.
Then Daniel noticed something on the bed.
An envelope.
His name was written across it.
DANIEL.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel was pictured outside Bennett Technologies six months earlier.
Someone had photographed him from across the street.
Behind it was another picture.
Lily leaving school.
Another.
Elena pushing Noah's stroller through Central Park.
Another.
Noah sleeping beside a nursery window.
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
This had not begun tonight.
Someone had been watching his family for months.
He turned over the final photograph.
Three words were written on the back.
YOU TOOK EVERYTHING.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Marcus.
A faint electronic beep sounded behind him.
Daniel turned.
Vivian's phone was sitting beneath a pillow.
The screen illuminated.
A new message appeared.
HE SAW THE VIDEO.
Then another.
PLAN B.
Daniel reached for the phone.
Before his fingers touched it, the entire mansion went dark.
Downstairs, Lily screamed.
Daniel ran.
“Elena!”
No answer.
He raced toward the stairs.
Emergency lights flickered red across the hall.
“Elena!”
Then her voice came from below.
“WE'RE HERE!”
Daniel reached the foyer.
Elena was crouched behind a marble column, holding Noah. Lily stood beside her.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
The security screen suddenly turned back on.
But the surveillance footage was gone.
Instead, a live video appeared.
Marcus Bennett sat inside an unknown room.
Older.
Thinner.
Alive.
He stared directly into the camera.
“Hello, little brother.”
Daniel froze.
Marcus smiled.
“You finally saw me.”
“Where's Vivian?”
Marcus laughed softly.
“You're still asking the wrong question.”
“What do you want?”
Marcus leaned toward the camera.
“I want what you stole from me.”
“I never stole anything from you.”
Marcus's smile disappeared.
“Our father disagreed.”
Daniel's blood ran cold.
Their father had died three years earlier.
“What are you talking about?”
Marcus lifted an old leather folder into view.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to their father.
“You inherited Bennett Technologies because everyone thought I was dead,” Marcus said. “But Dad discovered I wasn't.”
Daniel stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
“He found me.”
“When?”
“Six months before he died.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“And he changed his will.”
Daniel's breathing slowed.
Marcus opened the folder.
“But somebody made sure the new will disappeared.”
“Who?”
Marcus smiled again.
“That is the question you should have asked eleven years ago.”
The screen went black.
Then another image appeared.
Live footage.
Vivian was sitting inside a car.
Her hands were tied.
She looked terrified.
A figure stood behind her.
Marcus's voice came through the speakers.
“You have until midnight, Daniel.”
“For what?”
“To decide whether you want the truth…”
The camera moved closer to Vivian.
“…or another funeral.”
The screen went dark.
Lily whispered, “Dad?”
Daniel stared at his reflection in the black glass.
The night had started with his baby falling from a balcony.
Now his dead brother was alive.
His wife had tried to kill his son.
And somewhere inside eleven years of family history was a secret powerful enough to destroy all of them.
Daniel slowly turned toward Elena.
“Call the police.”
Elena reached for her phone.
May you like
Daniel looked upstairs.
“And nobody leaves this house.”
