Chapter 12 - THE SECOND CRIME Marcus reopened the twenty-eight-year-old accident.

Police files had vanished.

Witnesses had disappeared.

But one name remained.

Samuel Crowe.

A mechanic who inspected Jonathan’s car.

Official report:

Brake failure.

Marcus found Crowe living in Wisconsin.

They drove there.

Crowe opened the door.

Saw Claire.

And nearly collapsed.

“You look exactly like him.”

Claire swallowed.

“My father?”

Crowe nodded.

“I’ve been waiting thirty years for someone to ask.”

He led them into his garage.

From a locked cabinet, he removed an old metal brake line.

It had been deliberately cut.

Claire stared at it.

“Why did you keep this?”

Crowe looked ashamed.

“Because Richard Bennett paid my supervisor to replace the evidence.”

“Why didn’t you speak?”

“I had children.”

His eyes filled.

“I was a coward.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

She took the brake line.

“You’re a witness.”
