“I need protection.”
Marcus closed the blinds.
“From whom?”
“My husband.”

Claire stared at it.
“What is that?”
“Ethan’s private accounting records.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“He owes more than fourteen million dollars to underground gambling lenders.”
Claire frowned.
“What does Lily have to do with that?”
Vanessa began crying.
“The watch was insured.”
“For thirty-two thousand?”
“Two hundred and fifty thousand.”
Marcus understood.
“Insurance fraud.”
Vanessa nodded.
“But that’s only part of it.”
She opened another document.

Claire stared at the number.
“My daughter doesn’t have forty-eight million dollars.”
