Chapter 2 - A MOTHER DOESN’T BLINK “I DIDN’T STEAL IT!”

Lily’s cry echoed beneath the chandeliers.

Ethan stepped toward her.

“You’re lying.”

Claire blocked him.

“Don’t come near her.”

Their father, Richard Bennett, approached.

Richard was seventy, silver-haired and still carried himself like the billionaire developer who had spent forty years intimidating bankers, politicians and competitors.

“Claire.”

“No.”

“Handle this privately.”

“My daughter has been accused publicly.”

Margaret lowered her voice.

“Think about the family name.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

Of course.

The Bennett name.

Always the Bennett name.

Never Lily.

Never truth.

Ethan reached for the purse.

Lily pulled away.

“Give it to me.”

“No!”

He grabbed harder.

Claire shoved his hand away.

“Touch her again and—”

Ethan seized the heavy wooden wedding sign beside the gift table.

It happened quickly.

Too quickly.

He swung it toward Claire.

She ducked.

Lily moved.

The edge struck the child above the temple.

The sound was sickening.

Lily collapsed.

For one impossible second, nobody moved.

Then Claire screamed.

“LILY!”

She dropped beside her daughter.

Blood ran through Lily’s hair.

Ethan stared at the wooden sign in his hands.

His face changed from rage to panic.

Margaret whispered:

“Oh, God.”

Claire looked up.

And something inside her broke.

Not her courage.

Her fear.

For thirty-five years, Claire Bennett had been afraid of disappointing her family.

That fear died on the ballroom floor.

“Call 911.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Claire, wait.”

“CALL 911!”

Ethan dropped the sign.

“It was an accident.”

Claire pressed a napkin against Lily’s wound.

“No.”

Her eyes found the security camera above the ballroom doors.

“You planted the watch.”

Ethan went pale.

“You’re insane.”

“You planted it.”

Richard moved closer.

“Claire, stop talking.”

She stared at her father.

And realized something terrifying.

May you like

He wasn’t surprised.

He knew.
