Chapter 7 - The Gala Three weeks later, the city's wealthiest families gathered for the Vance Foundation Gala.

I walked into the ballroom wearing a midnight-blue gown.
Every conversation stopped.
Daniel was there.
So was Margaret.
And Victor Kane.
The room felt like a battlefield disguised as a celebration.
Daniel approached.
“You look beautiful.”
“I know.”
His jaw tightened.
“I want to talk.”
“We're talking.”
“Privately.”
“No.”
He glanced around.
“Evelyn, I know about the accounts.”
My heart skipped.
Only once.
Then I smiled.
“Then you know very little.”
Victor watched us from across the room.
His expression told me this was exactly what he wanted.
A scandal.
A public confrontation.
A headline.
So I raised my glass.
“To secrets.”
Daniel stared at me.
I whispered:
May you like
“Some secrets protect people.”
“And some destroy them.”
