Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN IN THE SHADOWS“WHO’S UP THERE?”

Adrian’s voice thundered through the mansion.
No answer came.
Only the soft ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Oliver whimpered against Adrian’s chest.
Maria stood frozen beside him, staring toward the second-floor landing.
Vanessa had stopped fighting.
That terrified Adrian more than anything.
Because seconds earlier, she had been screaming.
Now she looked like a woman who had just seen a ghost.
Adrian followed her gaze.
A figure moved behind the railing.
Female.
Tall.
Motionless.
Watching.
“Come downstairs,” Adrian ordered.
The figure didn’t move.
“I said come downstairs.”
Then a familiar voice drifted from the darkness.
“Adrian?”
His blood ran cold.
He knew that voice.
“Evelyn?”
A woman slowly stepped into the chandelier light.
Evelyn Cole.
Adrian’s aunt.
His late father’s younger sister.
Sixty-one years old.
Elegant.
Silver-blonde hair.
Perfect posture.
The woman who had practically raised Adrian after his mother died.
The woman who had stayed at the mansion after Claire’s death because Adrian had been too broken to manage a newborn child and a collapsing business empire alone.
She wore a cream silk robe.
Her expression was calm.
Almost concerned.
“What is all this shouting?”
Adrian stared at her.
Maria whispered behind him.
“Oh God.”
Evelyn’s eyes immediately moved toward Maria.
For half a second, her expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Then it vanished.
“What is she doing here?” Evelyn asked.
Adrian frowned.
“She works here.”
“I know that.”
“Then why did you ask?”
Evelyn descended the staircase slowly.
“I meant why is she involved in whatever ridiculous scene is happening downstairs?”
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
It was short.
Bitter.
Almost hysterical.
“Ridiculous?”
Evelyn stopped.
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“You always did know how to walk into a disaster pretending you had nothing to do with it.”
“Careful, Vanessa.”
That single sentence changed the room.
Adrian heard it.
So did Maria.
Vanessa smiled.
“There she is.”
Adrian shifted Oliver in his arms.
“What’s going on?”
Nobody answered.
His patience snapped.
“What the hell is going on in my house?”
Oliver started crying again.
Adrian immediately lowered his voice.
He kissed his son’s forehead.
“It’s okay, buddy.”
Maria approached carefully.
“Let me check him.”
Adrian hesitated.
Then nodded.
They moved to the couch.
Maria gently examined Oliver’s arms, head, and back.
“He needs a doctor.”
Adrian pulled out his phone.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“He doesn’t need a hospital.”
Adrian looked up.
“That wasn’t a request.”
“You’re overreacting.”
“My son was lying on a marble floor.”
“I told you Maria dropped him.”
Maria spun around.
“You put him there!”
Vanessa pointed at her.
“You weren’t supposed to come into that room!”
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Silence.
Adrian slowly stood.
“What?”
Vanessa realized her mistake.
“I meant—”
“You weren’t supposed to come into that room?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Then explain what you meant.”
Vanessa looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn gave her nothing.
No rescue.
No reaction.
Adrian noticed.
And suddenly the pieces started rearranging themselves.
Vanessa knew something.
Maria knew something.
Evelyn knew something.
And somehow, every secret seemed to lead back to Claire.
Adrian turned to Maria.
“Play the rest of the video.”
Maria hesitated.
“Now.”
She lifted the phone.
Claire’s face appeared again.
Adrian’s chest tightened.
Even after eighteen months, seeing her alive felt physically painful.
Claire looked exhausted in the recording.
Her hair was tied loosely behind her head.
She kept glancing toward a closed door.
Then she spoke.
“I don’t know how much time I have.”
Adrian’s fingers tightened around the couch.
Claire continued.
“If anything happens to me, there are three things you need to know.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“This is grotesque.”
Adrian raised one hand.
“Not another word.”
Evelyn stopped.
Claire continued on the screen.
“First, Oliver is yours.”
Adrian’s eyes closed briefly.
A breath escaped him.
Then Claire said:
“But there were irregularities at the fertility clinic.”
His eyes opened.
Vanessa looked away.
“Second,” Claire continued, “someone accessed our embryo records without authorization.”
Adrian stared at the phone.
“And third…”
Claire suddenly looked directly into the camera.
“The person doing this knows our family.”
The video glitched.
Static covered the screen.
Then Claire appeared again.
“I originally thought Vanessa was involved.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“But I was wrong.”
Adrian slowly looked at her.
Vanessa whispered:
“I told you.”
Claire continued.
“Vanessa is hiding something, but she isn’t the person I’m afraid of.”
Maria looked toward Evelyn.
Adrian saw it.
Evelyn saw it too.
Claire’s voice grew quieter.
“The woman I’m afraid of has access to the house. She has access to Adrian. She knows his schedule. She knows our doctors.”
Evelyn laughed softly.
“This is absurd.”
Claire continued.
“And she believes Oliver belongs to her family more than he belongs to me.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Evelyn’s smile disappeared.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian looked at his aunt.
“Did you know our fertility doctor?”
Evelyn’s answer came too quickly.
“Of course not.”
Maria whispered:
“That’s a lie.”
Evelyn turned.
“I beg your pardon?”
Maria stood.
“I saw you at the clinic.”
Adrian stared at her.
“When?”
“Three days before Claire died.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“She’s lying.”
Maria reached into her apron again.
This time she removed a folded piece of paper.
“I knew tonight might happen.”
She handed it to Adrian.
It was an old parking receipt.
Wellington Reproductive Center.
The date was printed across the top.
Three days before Claire’s death.
Adrian looked at the license plate recorded on the receipt.
He recognized it.
Evelyn’s Mercedes.
His eyes lifted.
Evelyn’s face remained calm.
“You can explain that?”
“Yes.”
“Then explain it.”
“I drove Claire there.”
Maria shook her head.
“No.”
Evelyn’s eyes sharpened.
“You weren’t there.”
“I was.”
“You were Claire’s friend?”
Maria swallowed.
“I was her nurse.”
Adrian stared at her.
“What?”
“At the clinic.”
Everything stopped.
Maria continued.
“I worked in embryology patient care.”
Adrian could barely process it.
“You told me you were a childcare nurse.”
“I am now.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire asked me to.”
Adrian laughed once in disbelief.
“My dead wife arranged for you to become my son’s nanny?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Now you understand.”
Adrian turned.
“Understand what?”
“Maria wasn’t hired by accident.”
Maria’s eyes filled with tears.
“Claire was terrified.”
“Of Evelyn?”
Maria looked toward the staircase.
“I didn’t know who she was afraid of.”
“But you suspected.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Maria didn’t answer.
Adrian walked closer.
“Who?”
Maria finally looked at Evelyn.
“Her.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“This is insanity.”
Maria’s voice shook.
“Claire discovered someone had requested genetic testing on the embryos.”
Adrian frowned.
“What kind of testing?”
“Parentage.”
His stomach dropped.
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn interrupted.
“This woman clearly has psychological problems.”
Maria ignored her.
“She also discovered that someone had requested the destruction of one embryo.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
“What?”
“There were two viable embryos.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Maria shook her head.
“You were told there were two.”
Adrian stared at her.
“There were three.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Adrian grabbed the edge of the table.
“Three?”
Maria nodded.
“One disappeared from the records.”
Vanessa slowly sat down.
Even she seemed shaken by that.
Adrian turned toward Evelyn.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“You were at the clinic.”
“I already told you—”
“STOP LYING TO ME!”
Oliver screamed.
Adrian immediately regretted shouting.
Maria reached for the baby.
This time Adrian handed Oliver to her.
He needed both hands free.
He needed to think.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You’re emotional.”
“My wife is dead.”
“I know.”
“My son was just found on the floor.”
“I know.”
“My nanny is telling me someone tampered with our embryos.”
“I heard her.”
“And you’re standing there like we’re discussing dinner.”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“Because someone in this house has to remain rational.”
Vanessa laughed again.
“There’s your favorite word.”
Evelyn turned.
“What?”
“Rational.”
Vanessa stood.
“You said the same thing to me when you offered me money.”
Adrian froze.
“What money?”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Evelyn stared at her.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.”
Adrian stepped toward her.
“What money?”
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“Two hundred thousand dollars.”
“For what?”
“To get close to you.”
Adrian felt something inside him break.
“What?”
“It wasn’t supposed to become real.”
His voice dropped.
“What wasn’t?”
“Us.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“She approached me eleven months ago.”
Evelyn said coldly:
“She’s lying.”
Vanessa continued.
“She knew we had met at that charity event. She knew you liked me.”
Adrian stared at Evelyn.
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“She told me you were grieving. Lonely. Vulnerable.”
“Why would she care?”
Vanessa looked toward Oliver.
“That’s what I never understood.”
Maria held the baby tighter.
Vanessa continued.
“Evelyn wanted someone close to you.”
Adrian whispered:
“Why?”
“I was supposed to report everything.”
“Everything?”
“Your schedule. Your meetings. What you said about Claire. What you knew about the clinic.”
Adrian’s face twisted with disgust.
“And you agreed?”
“At first.”
“For money?”
“Yes.”
The answer hit harder than Adrian expected.
Vanessa wiped tears from her face.
“But then I fell in love with you.”
Adrian said nothing.
“I know you don’t believe me.”
“I don’t know what I believe anymore.”
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s fair.”
Maria suddenly looked toward the hallway.
“Mr. Cole.”
Something in her voice changed.
Adrian turned.
The front door was open.
Cold ocean wind blew through the foyer.
Evelyn was gone.
Adrian ran outside.
“EVELYN!”
The driveway was empty.
Her Mercedes was still parked near the fountain.
Adrian stopped.
If her car was there…
how had she left?
Maria came behind him carrying Oliver.
“She didn’t.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
Maria stared toward the dark eastern wing of the mansion.
“She’s still inside.”
Vanessa appeared behind them.
“No.”
Her face drained of color.
“She’s going to the basement.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What’s in the basement?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Something Claire found.”
Adrian grabbed her shoulders.
“What?”
“I never saw it.”
“What did Claire find?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with terror.
“A room.”
Adrian released her.
“What room?”
“One that doesn’t appear on the architectural plans.”
Maria whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Vanessa looked toward the mansion.
“Evelyn made me promise never to go near it.”
Adrian was already moving.
“Where?”
“Adrian, wait.”
“WHERE?”
Vanessa pointed toward the east corridor.
“Behind the wine cellar.”
Adrian rushed inside.
Maria called after him.
“Mr. Cole!”
But he didn’t stop.
He crossed the foyer.
Down the hallway.
Past the kitchen.
Through the old oak door leading toward the cellar.
He descended the stairs.
The temperature dropped.
At the bottom was the wine cellar.
Hundreds of bottles lined the walls.
Adrian searched desperately.
Nothing.
Then he noticed one wine rack had been moved.
Behind it—
a steel door.
His heart pounded.
He approached.
The door was open.
A light glowed beyond it.
Adrian stepped inside.
And stopped.
The hidden room was filled with photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Photographs of Claire.
Photographs of Adrian.
Photographs of Oliver.
Medical records covered one wall.
Fertility clinic documents covered another.
Then Adrian saw something that made his knees weaken.
A photograph of Claire entering Wellington Reproductive Center.
Beside it was a photograph of Evelyn meeting a doctor outside.
And beneath both photographs was a handwritten note:
PHASE ONE COMPLETE.
Adrian stared at the words.
Then he heard a click behind him.
The steel door slammed shut.
He spun around.
Locked.
“EVELYN!”
No answer.
Then a monitor on the desk suddenly turned on.
Static filled the screen.
A video began playing automatically.
Claire appeared.
But this recording was different.
She was crying.
Someone was filming her from across a room.
Claire looked toward whoever held the camera.
“You won’t get away with this.”
A woman’s voice answered.
Adrian recognized it instantly.
Evelyn.
“You still don’t understand, Claire.”
Claire stood.
“Oliver is my child.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice remained calm.
“He belongs to the Cole family.”
“He belongs to Adrian and me.”
“Not after you’re gone.”
Adrian’s blood turned to ice.
Claire whispered:
“What are you going to do?”
The screen went black.
Then one final line appeared.
ARCHIVE 17 — NIGHT OF INCIDENT.
Adrian stepped toward the computer.
His hands trembled.
There were dozens of archived files.
But Archive 17 required a password.
Behind him, something crashed.
He turned.
The steel door opened.
Maria stood there.
“Mr. Cole!”
“Where’s Oliver?”
“With security.”
“Vanessa?”
“Gone.”
Adrian stared at her.
“What?”
“She disappeared.”
Then Maria held up Vanessa’s phone.
“She left this.”
Adrian took it.
One unread message glowed across the screen.
It had arrived thirty seconds earlier.
From an unknown number.
YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT QUIET.
Below it was a photograph.
Vanessa.
Sitting in the passenger seat of a car.
Terrified.
And behind her—
Evelyn.
Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Where is she?”
Evelyn’s voice came softly through the speaker.
“You finally found the room.”
“If you hurt Vanessa—”
“You’re still worried about the wrong woman.”
“What do you want?”
“The same thing I’ve always wanted.”
“What?”
A pause.
Then Evelyn said:
“Oliver.”
Adrian’s blood froze.
“You come near my son and I swear—”
“He was never supposed to be yours alone, Adrian.”
“What the hell does that mean?”
Evelyn laughed softly.
Then she said the sentence that shattered everything Adrian believed about his family.
“Ask Maria whose DNA was really used to create him.”
The call ended.
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
Then he looked at Maria.
She was crying.
May you like
And Adrian knew immediately.
She knew the answer.
