Chapter 5 - MARIA’S SECRETAdrian didn’t speak during the drive home.

He couldn’t.

One sentence repeated endlessly inside his head.

Maria.

Detective Reed had Mercer transported to the hospital under armed guard.

Evelyn had escaped through a service tunnel beneath the clinic.

Police were searching the coastline.

But Adrian barely heard any of it.

Maria.

When the mansion doors opened, she was standing in the foyer with Oliver.

Safe.

Alive.

Waiting.

Adrian walked toward her.

Maria immediately knew.

Her face changed.

“Mercer told you.”

Adrian stopped.

Vanessa stood several feet behind him.

Reed entered last.

“Tell me,” Adrian said.

Maria held Oliver closer.

“Not while I’m holding him.”

She handed the baby carefully to Adrian.

Then she stepped backward.

Adrian stared at her.

“Were you pregnant with my child?”

Maria closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Vanessa gasped softly.

Adrian felt his heart pounding.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“Before Claire died?”

“Yes.”

“Did Claire know?”

Maria nodded.

Adrian stared at her in disbelief.

“You carried our embryo?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Maria wiped her eyes.

“Because Claire couldn’t.”

Adrian froze.

“What are you talking about?”

Maria looked at him.

“After her second surgery, doctors told Claire carrying a pregnancy could kill her.”

“I knew that.”

“She wanted another option.”

“We discussed surrogacy.”

“Yes.”

“We decided against it.”

“No.”

Maria’s answer was gentle.

“You decided against it.”

Adrian stared.

“Claire didn’t.”

His face tightened.

“She did this without telling me?”

“She was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When the pregnancy was stable.”

Adrian’s voice shook.

“What happened?”

Maria looked down.

“I lost the baby at eleven weeks.”

The anger drained from Adrian immediately.

Maria’s tears fell.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian looked at Oliver.

A child he never knew existed.

A pregnancy he never knew had begun.

A loss Claire had carried alone.

“Why didn’t she tell me afterward?”

“Because you were already grieving.”

“Grieving what?”

“Your father had just died.”

Adrian remembered.

His father’s death.

Business chaos.

Claire’s health problems.

He had thought they survived that year together.

Now he realized Claire had been carrying secrets inside secrets.

Maria continued.

“She blamed herself.”

“For losing the pregnancy?”

“Yes.”

“She shouldn’t have.”

“I told her that.”

Adrian looked at Maria.

“And Evelyn knew?”

“Not initially.”

“But she found out.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Clinic records.”

Adrian understood.

That was when Evelyn began investigating the embryos.

That was when everything started.

Maria reached into her pocket.

“There’s something Claire left for you.”

Adrian stared at her.

“How many things did my wife leave with you?”

Maria almost smiled through her tears.

“More than she should have needed to.”

She handed him a small key.

“Safe-deposit box.”

“Where?”

“First Atlantic Bank.”

“What’s inside?”

“I don’t know.”

“Claire never told you?”

“She said it contained the truth about your father.”

Adrian looked toward Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

“My grandfather?”

Adrian nodded slowly.

Evelyn had claimed Adrian’s father forced her to give Vanessa away.

If Claire had investigated the family…

perhaps she had discovered why.

They went to the bank the next morning under police protection.

Inside the box were photographs.

Letters.

Adoption records.

And a cassette recording.

Reed arranged for the audio to be digitized.

Adrian pressed play.

His father’s voice filled the room.

Richard Cole.

Dead three years.

“Evelyn, if you ever hear this, I need you to understand why I did what I did.”

Vanessa sat motionless.

Richard continued.

“You believe I took your daughter because I was ashamed of you.”

Evelyn’s recorded voice responded.

“You were.”

“No.”

“You called her a disgrace.”

“I called the situation dangerous.”

“Because her father was poor?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

A long silence followed.

Then Richard said:

“Because her father was Samuel Mercer.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

Vanessa stood.

“What?”

Maria covered her mouth.

Dr. Mercer.

Vanessa’s biological father.

Richard continued.

“Samuel was married. He was also treating you medically.”

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“He loved me.”

“He exploited you.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know he falsified prescriptions. I know he manipulated your treatment. And I know he tried to use your pregnancy to gain access to the family trust.”

Vanessa stared at the speakers.

Her entire identity was collapsing.

Richard continued.

“I arranged the adoption because you were hospitalized and Samuel threatened to take the baby.”

Evelyn screamed on the recording.

“You stole her!”

“I protected her.”

“From me?”

“From him.”

The recording ended.

Vanessa sat slowly.

“So Mercer…”

“Is your father,” Adrian said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No wonder Evelyn trusted him.”

Maria whispered:

“She didn’t know he had manipulated her.”

Adrian looked toward the adoption records.

Vanessa’s adoptive parents had been ordinary people.

Teachers.

No connection to the Cole family.

Then Adrian noticed another envelope.

Claire’s handwriting.

FOR ADRIAN ONLY.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Adrian read silently at first.

Then aloud.

“Adrian, if you’re reading this, I failed to tell you everything before I ran out of time.”

He swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

His voice broke.

Maria looked away.

Adrian continued.

“I know you will be angry that I kept the surrogacy attempt from you. You deserve to be. I thought I was protecting you from another disappointment. I understand now that love does not give us permission to make someone else’s choices for them.”

Adrian stopped.

That sentence hit him harder than anything else.

Claire continued.

“Maria did nothing wrong. I asked her. She lost the pregnancy and carried that grief quietly because I begged her to.”

Maria began crying.

“Please don’t blame her.”

Adrian looked at Maria.

She covered her mouth.

He continued.

“I discovered Evelyn’s connection to Mercer after reviewing the clinic access logs. At first I believed she wanted money. I was wrong.”

Adrian turned the page.

“She wants to rewrite the past.”

Vanessa stared.

“Evelyn believes if she can place Vanessa inside our family, she can undo what happened thirty years ago.”

Adrian read on.

“But people are not pieces on a chessboard.”

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Vanessa is not responsible for Evelyn’s pain. Neither is Oliver. Neither are you.”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

Then he reached the final paragraph.

“If Oliver is born and I am not there, please tell him one thing.”

Adrian stopped.

He couldn’t continue.

Maria whispered:

“What?”

Adrian forced himself to read.

“Tell him his mother loved him before she ever saw his face.”

The room disappeared behind his tears.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa suddenly noticed something inside the envelope.

“There’s another page.”

Adrian pulled it out.

It wasn’t a letter.

It was a bank statement.

Payments.

Dozens of them.

From an account controlled by Evelyn.

To Dr. Mercer.

But the final payment had been made after Claire’s death.

For $500,000.

Reed leaned forward.

“That could establish a financial connection.”

Adrian stared at the transaction.

Then Maria pointed to the memo field.

Three words.

SECOND TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Adrian frowned.

“What second transfer?”

Nobody knew.

Then Reed’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“When?”

He listened.

“Are you sure?”

Another pause.

“We’re coming.”

He hung up.

Adrian stood.

“What happened?”

“Mercer disappeared from the hospital.”

Vanessa stared.

“How?”

“He had help.”

“Evelyn?”

Reed shook his head.

“No.”

Adrian frowned.

“Then who?”

“The security footage shows a woman entering his room wearing hospital scrubs.”

Maria went pale.

“Evelyn?”

“No.”

Reed turned his phone around.

A surveillance image filled the screen.

The woman was younger.

Dark hair.

Mid-thirties.

Adrian had never seen her before.

But Maria had.

Her face collapsed.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You know her?”

Maria whispered:

“She worked at Wellington.”

“Who is she?”

Maria stared at the photograph.

“Dr. Rachel Shaw.”

“What does she have to do with Mercer?”

Maria’s voice became barely audible.

“She performed the embryo transfers.”

Adrian felt dread return.

Reed asked:

“Both?”

Maria nodded.

“Mine…”

She looked at Oliver.

“…and Claire’s.”

Adrian stared at the photograph.

Then Vanessa noticed something.

“Zoom in.”

Reed enlarged the image.

Around Rachel Shaw’s neck was a silver pendant.

Adrian stopped breathing.

It was identical to Claire’s necklace.

Maria whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Adrian looked closer.

There was an inscription.

A single letter.

C.

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph arrived.

Dr. Mercer sat tied to a chair.

Behind him stood Rachel Shaw.

Below the photograph was one sentence.

EVELYN DIDN’T KILL CLAIRE.
