Chapter 4 - THE CLINIC“HE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE.”

Adrian stood in the mansion’s security room with Oliver sleeping against Maria’s shoulder.
Detective Daniel Reed stared at the message on Maria’s phone.
“Evelyn specifically asked you to bring the baby?”
“Yes.”
“Then Oliver stays here.”
Adrian nodded.
“Agreed.”
Reed looked surprised.
“You’re not planning something stupid?”
“I’m planning to get Vanessa out.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Adrian looked at him.
“I’m not taking my son anywhere near that woman.”
Reed folded his arms.
“Good.”
Adrian turned toward the security monitors.
Officers searched the mansion.
Another team was heading toward Wellington.
But Reed had already discovered something troubling.
The clinic had officially closed six months earlier.
Its parent corporation had gone bankrupt.
The building should have been empty.
Yet electricity usage showed the archive wing was still active.
Someone had been maintaining it.
Adrian didn’t need to ask who.
Maria gently rocked Oliver.
The baby had been examined by an emergency pediatrician.
No fractures.
No head trauma.
But bruising on his upper arm confirmed Maria’s story.
Adrian could barely look at the marks without feeling rage.
He approached Maria.
“Stay with him.”
“I will.”
“No matter who calls. No matter what happens.”
“I understand.”
Adrian touched Oliver’s cheek.
His son opened his eyes.
For one tiny second, everything else disappeared.
Adrian kissed his forehead.
“I’m coming back.”
Then he left.
Rain hammered the coast as Reed drove toward Wellington.
Two unmarked police vehicles followed.
Adrian stared through the windshield.
His mind kept replaying Claire’s final recording.
Then let her.
Evelyn’s voice.
Calm.
Unemotional.
How many family dinners had they shared afterward?
How many times had Evelyn comforted him?
How many nights had she sat beside Oliver’s crib?
Adrian felt physically sick.
Reed glanced toward him.
“You trust Maria?”
“Yes.”
“Even after learning she lied about why she came into your house?”
Adrian considered the question.
“She protected Oliver when everyone else was using him.”
“That’s not proof.”
“No.”
“But?”
Adrian stared through the rain.
“It’s enough for tonight.”
They reached Wellington twenty minutes later.
The abandoned clinic stood behind rusted gates.
Most windows were dark.
One glowed on the third floor.
Reed’s radio crackled.
Teams moved into position.
Adrian reached for the door.
Reed stopped him.
“You stay behind me.”
“Vanessa is inside.”
“And Evelyn wants you inside.”
“She also thinks I brought Oliver.”
“Exactly.”
Reed pulled his weapon.
They entered.
The lobby smelled of dust and disinfectant.
Old chairs lined the walls.
A faded mural of smiling babies covered one side.
Adrian hated it immediately.
They moved toward the archive wing.
A light flickered overhead.
Then speakers crackled.
Evelyn’s voice filled the building.
“Adrian.”
He stopped.
Reed looked toward the ceiling.
“You brought police.”
Adrian shouted:
“Where’s Vanessa?”
“You disappoint me.”
“WHERE IS SHE?”
A scream echoed from upstairs.
Vanessa.
Adrian ran.
“Cole!”
Reed followed.
They reached the third floor.
A corridor stretched ahead.
At the far end, Vanessa was tied to a chair behind a glass laboratory wall.
“Adrian!”
He rushed toward her.
Then the laboratory door locked automatically.
Evelyn stepped from another room.
She held a small metal cryogenic container.
Adrian stopped.
“The embryo?”
“Yes.”
“Let Vanessa go.”
Evelyn looked through the glass at her daughter.
“She failed me.”
Vanessa sobbed.
“I didn’t even know you were my mother!”
Evelyn’s expression softened.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“When everything was safe.”
“You paid me to sleep with him!”
Adrian flinched.
Evelyn remained calm.
“I paid you to become part of his life.”
“You knew Oliver was biologically mine!”
“Yes.”
Vanessa stared at her mother in horror.
“And you still pushed me toward Adrian?”
“I wanted you to have the family stolen from me.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“That isn’t a family.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Vanessa continued.
“You didn’t love me.”
“Don’t say that.”
“You used me.”
“I searched thirty years for you.”
“And when you found me, you turned me into a weapon.”
“Vanessa.”
“You made me hate Claire.”
Evelyn’s composure cracked.
“She took your place.”
“No.”
“She had everything you should have had!”
“No!”
Vanessa screamed so loudly her voice echoed down the corridor.
“CLAIRE DIDN’T STEAL ANYTHING FROM ME!”
Evelyn froze.
Vanessa sobbed.
“You did.”
Adrian saw something break in Evelyn’s eyes.
Not remorse.
Rage.
She lifted the cryogenic container.
“You don’t understand sacrifice.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“I understand enough.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You want the last piece of Claire?”
Adrian stared at the container.
“The original embryo.”
“Yes.”
“Give it to me.”
“Why?”
“Because it belongs to Claire and me.”
Evelyn smiled bitterly.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“You still choose her.”
“She was my wife.”
“She was never a Cole.”
“She was Oliver’s mother.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“Vanessa is his mother.”
Adrian shook his head.
“DNA doesn’t erase Claire.”
“She didn’t give birth to him.”
“She fought for him before he existed.”
Evelyn stared.
“She discovered what you did and tried to protect him.”
“She wanted to destroy my family.”
“She wanted to expose you.”
“Same thing.”
Adrian finally understood.
Evelyn had spent decades confusing control with love.
Loss with entitlement.
Blood with ownership.
And everyone around her had paid the price.
Reed quietly moved toward another entrance.
Evelyn noticed.
“Detective.”
She lifted a small remote.
“Another step and the laboratory doors seal permanently.”
Reed stopped.
“What do you want?”
Evelyn looked at Adrian.
“A trade.”
“For what?”
“The baby.”
Adrian laughed once.
“Never.”
“Then Claire’s embryo dies.”
She held the container over a disposal unit.
Adrian’s chest tightened.
Inside that container might be the last embryo he and Claire had created together.
The last biological possibility of the family they once dreamed of.
Evelyn saw his hesitation.
“I knew it.”
“Knew what?”
“You still love Claire more than Oliver.”
Adrian stared at her.
Then something became perfectly clear.
He stepped forward.
“Destroy it.”
Evelyn froze.
Vanessa looked at him.
Even Reed seemed surprised.
Adrian’s eyes never left Evelyn.
“You heard me.”
“This is Claire’s child.”
“No.”
“It could become—”
“No.”
Adrian’s voice broke.
“It is an embryo Claire and I created. It matters to me. But Oliver is alive.”
Evelyn stared.
“He’s my son.”
“You would sacrifice Claire’s last—”
“I’m not sacrificing my living child to preserve a possibility.”
Silence.
Adrian continued.
“You keep talking about family like it’s blood in a laboratory.”
He pointed toward Vanessa.
“That’s your daughter.”
Vanessa cried silently behind the glass.
“And you tied her to a chair.”
Evelyn’s hand trembled.
“You say you love Oliver.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“But you used him to control everyone around you.”
Evelyn’s breathing changed.
“You don’t know what love is.”
For the first time, Evelyn looked genuinely wounded.
Then she pressed the remote.
ALARMS screamed.
Steel shutters began dropping.
“MOVE!” Reed shouted.
Adrian dove toward Vanessa’s room.
Reed fired at the control panel.
Sparks exploded.
The glass door stopped halfway.
Adrian crawled underneath.
Vanessa screamed:
“She’s getting away!”
Adrian reached her.
He tore at the restraints.
“Where’s Evelyn?”
“Service elevator!”
Reed pursued her.
Adrian freed Vanessa.
Then he noticed blood on her wrist.
“You’re hurt.”
“I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not.”
“Adrian.”
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“She told me why she wanted Oliver here.”
Adrian froze.
“Why?”
“She wasn’t going to take him.”
“What?”
Vanessa’s face was filled with terror.
“She wanted to run another DNA test.”
“Why?”
“Because she thinks the embryo switch wasn’t the only switch.”
Adrian stared at her.
Vanessa continued.
“She thinks Mercer betrayed her.”
“How?”
“She gave him my donated egg.”
“Yes.”
“But Evelyn never personally saw the implantation.”
Adrian’s stomach dropped.
Vanessa whispered:
“She doesn’t actually know whose embryo became Oliver.”
A gunshot echoed downstairs.
Then another.
Adrian and Vanessa ran toward the stairwell.
They found Reed beside the rear exit.
Dr. Mercer was lying on the floor.
Alive.
Bleeding from his shoulder.
Adrian stared.
“Mercer?”
The doctor looked older than Adrian remembered.
Terrified.
He grabbed Adrian’s coat.
“She found me.”
“Evelyn?”
Mercer nodded.
“She made me come here.”
Adrian crouched.
“Tell me the truth.”
Mercer struggled to breathe.
“About Oliver?”
“Yes.”
Mercer looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Adrian.
“Evelyn believes I implanted Vanessa’s embryo.”
“Did you?”
Mercer shook his head.
“No.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Adrian whispered:
“Then whose embryo did you implant?”
Mercer’s eyes filled with tears.
“Claire’s.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
“Claire is Oliver’s biological mother?”
“Yes.”
Relief and horror hit him simultaneously.
“Then why did the records say otherwise?”
“Because I switched the labels.”
“Why?”
“To fool Evelyn.”
Mercer coughed.
“I preserved Vanessa’s embryo.”
Adrian looked toward the cryogenic container Evelyn had abandoned during her escape.
“What’s in there?”
Mercer stared at it.
“Vanessa’s.”
Vanessa sank against the wall.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Oliver was his and Claire’s biological son.
Everything Evelyn believed had been built on another lie.
Then Mercer grabbed Adrian’s sleeve.
“But listen to me.”
“What?”
“There were three embryos.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Mercer shook his head.
“Three pregnancies.”
Adrian stared.
“What did you say?”
Mercer whispered:
“Claire wasn’t the only woman carrying a Cole embryo.”
Adrian felt the floor disappear beneath him.
“Who was the other woman?”
Mercer looked toward Vanessa.
May you like
Then he said:
“Maria.”
