Chapter 9 - BLACK HARBORThe hospital bracelet contained a hidden memory chip.

Detective Reed’s technicians extracted it at 2:13 a.m.

Adrian watched from behind the glass.

Rachel was in surgery.

Maria stayed with Oliver under armed protection.

Ethan was somewhere unknown.

And Adrian was done waiting.

“Open it.”

The technician looked at Reed.

Reed nodded.

The drive contained one folder.

BLACK HARBOR.

Password protected.

A clue appeared:

THE DAY WE BECAME THREE.

Adrian stared.

Claire.

He typed Oliver’s birth date.

Denied.

Their wedding date.

Denied.

Then he understood.

Not Oliver.

Ethan.

The day Claire learned Maria’s embryo transfer had succeeded.

Maria remembered the date.

April 9.

Adrian entered it.

Unlocked.

Hundreds of documents appeared.

Financial records.

Patient lists.

Genetic reports.

Adoption files.

Reed leaned toward the monitor.

“What the hell was Wellington doing?”

The answer emerged slowly.

Wellington had operated a secret program for wealthy clients.

Not fertility treatment.

Selection.

Embryos were screened not merely for serious inherited diseases, but for traits clients wanted.

Some records involved unauthorized transfers.

Some involved falsified parentage.

Others involved embryos moved between patients without complete consent.

Adrian felt sick.

“Mercer built this?”

Reed shook his head.

“Not alone.”

Money had flowed through shell companies.

One appeared repeatedly.

Black Harbor Holdings.

Adrian recognized the address.

His own family corporation.

“No.”

Reed looked at him.

“Your father?”

“Richard would never—”

Then Adrian stopped.

He had learned not to finish sentences like that anymore.

They opened incorporation documents.

Black Harbor Holdings had been established twenty-six years earlier.

The controlling signature belonged to—

Richard Cole.

Adrian stepped backward.

His father.

Again.

But another document changed everything.

Richard had shut the program down twelve years earlier.

A handwritten memorandum explained why.

I believed genetic screening could prevent suffering. Mercer turned it into a marketplace for human lives. Effective immediately, all Cole funding ends.

Adrian read further.

Richard had attempted to expose Mercer.

But someone blocked him.

Someone inside Cole Industries.

A board member.

Initials:

D.R.

Reed frowned.

“Who is D.R.?”

Adrian stared.

“I don’t know.”

They searched old board records.

One name appeared.

David Rourke.

Former chief financial officer.

Richard’s closest business partner.

Adrian remembered him.

Uncle David.

Not actually family.

But close enough that Adrian had called him that as a child.

He had disappeared from corporate life after Richard’s death.

Reed searched government records.

“Rourke died four years ago.”

Adrian laughed without humor.

“We’ve heard that before.”

They pulled the death certificate.

Signed by a physician.

Samuel Mercer.

Reed and Adrian looked at each other.

“Find him.”

At dawn, Rachel regained consciousness.

Adrian entered her room.

“David Rourke.”

Rachel’s face changed.

That was enough.

“You know him.”

“Yes.”

“Is he alive?”

“I don’t know.”

“Rachel.”

“I swear.”

“What was his connection to Claire?”

Rachel looked toward the door.

“Claire believed he controlled Black Harbor after Richard tried to shut it down.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

“How much?”

“Hundreds of millions.”

Adrian stared.

“From selling embryos?”

“From wealthy families paying for illegal procedures, hidden parentage, genetic manipulation, records that disappeared.”

Adrian felt disgust.

“And Ethan?”

“Proof.”

“What?”

“Ethan’s birth proved Wellington falsified a miscarriage, relocated a surrogate, concealed a living child, and created false records.”

“So whoever controls Black Harbor needs Ethan gone?”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“They need him controlled.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Because Claire built the evidence around him.”

“How?”

“His medical identity.”

Rachel explained.

Claire knew electronic records could be erased.

So she created a chain of evidence tied to Ethan’s genetic profile.

His DNA could authenticate which embryo had been transferred.

His birth proved Vale’s testimony.

His mitochondrial markers linked him to Claire.

His paternal markers linked him to Adrian.

And the clinic’s internal tracking sequence connected him to the hidden program.

Ethan wasn’t merely a child Black Harbor wanted hidden.

He was living evidence.

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“They kidnapped a two-year-old to protect a corporation.”

Rachel whispered:

“They’ve done worse.”

Reed entered.

“We found Rourke.”

Adrian turned.

“Alive?”

“Maybe.”

A traffic camera had photographed a man matching Rourke’s face entering a private airfield six months earlier.

Another photograph showed him with Mercer.

Then Rachel noticed something in the image.

“Zoom in.”

Behind Rourke stood another man.

Adrian recognized him.

His stomach dropped.

“No.”

Reed looked at him.

“Who?”

Adrian could barely speak.

“Michael Trent.”

“Who is Michael Trent?”

“My head of security.”

Silence.

The man responsible for protecting Oliver.

The man who had been inside Adrian’s mansion for six years.

Reed immediately called the security team.

No answer.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Maria.

He answered.

“Maria?”

She was whispering.

“Mr. Cole…”

Something was wrong.

“Where are you?”

“In Oliver’s nursery.”

“Where’s Trent?”

“Outside the door.”

Adrian stood.

“Lock it.”

“I did.”

“Do not open it.”

“He says Detective Reed ordered him to move Oliver.”

Reed grabbed the phone.

“I gave no such order.”

Maria began breathing faster.

A knock sounded through the phone.

“Maria?”

Trent’s voice.

“Open the door.”

She backed away.

Adrian shouted:

“GET AWAY FROM THE DOOR!”

The handle moved.

Locked.

Then another sound.

Metal.

Reed’s face changed.

“He’s picking the lock.”

Adrian ran.

Police vehicles followed him toward the mansion.

Maria pushed Oliver’s crib against the bathroom door and locked herself inside.

Trent entered the nursery.

“Maria.”

She covered Oliver’s mouth gently as he whimpered.

“Don’t make this difficult.”

Maria said nothing.

Trent approached the bathroom.

“You think Adrian cares about you?”

Silence.

“He’ll blame you eventually.”

Maria held Oliver tighter.

Then Trent said something that froze her.

“Just like he’ll blame you when he learns what really happened to Ethan.”

Maria’s eyes widened.

“How do you know that name?”

Silence.

Then Trent laughed.

“Open the door.”

Maria backed toward the window.

Two floors below was a balcony roof.

Dangerous.

But possible.

She wrapped Oliver tightly in a blanket.

The bathroom door shook.

One hit.

Two.

The frame cracked.

Maria opened the window.

Wind rushed inside.

“Come on, sweetheart.”

She climbed onto the ledge.

The door exploded open.

Trent entered.

“STOP!”

Maria jumped.

She landed hard on the lower roof.

Pain shot through her ankle.

Oliver screamed.

But she held him.

Trent appeared at the window.

Maria crawled toward the edge.

Then sirens erupted.

Trent disappeared.

Adrian’s car skidded into the driveway.

He ran inside.

“MARIA!”

She screamed from the roof.

“WE’RE HERE!”

Adrian reached her minutes later.

He took Oliver.

Held him.

Kissed him.

Then looked at Maria’s injured ankle.

“You saved him.”

She shook her head.

“Trent knew Ethan.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

“He said his name.”

Reed’s officers searched the mansion.

Trent was gone.

But his room contained something.

A hidden phone.

Photographs of Adrian.

Claire.

Maria.

Oliver.

Rachel.

And Ethan.

One photograph showed Ethan at a playground only three days earlier.

On the back were two words:

LEVERAGE ONE.

Oliver’s photograph said:

LEVERAGE TWO.

Then Reed found a third photograph.

Adrian stared.

It showed a young woman leaving a grocery store.

He had never seen her.

On the back:

LEVERAGE THREE.

Maria looked closer.

Then gasped.

“That’s impossible.”

“What?”

She pointed at the woman.

“I know her.”

“Who?”

Maria’s voice trembled.

“Her name is Lily Vale.”

“Vale’s daughter?”

Maria shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who is she?”

“She was born at Wellington.”

Adrian waited.

Maria whispered:

“And according to clinic records…”

May you like

Her eyes moved to Adrian.

“She died at birth twenty-four years ago.”
