Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN CLAIRE NEVER MENTIONEDThree days later, Ethan entered the Cole mansion.

He held Rachel’s hand.

Adrian walked beside them.

Maria waited in the foyer with Oliver.

When Ethan saw her, he stopped.

Maria stopped too.

For nearly two years she had believed the baby she carried had died.

Now he stood ten feet away.

Alive.

Rachel knelt.

“Ethan, this is Maria.”

Ethan hid behind her.

Maria smiled through tears.

“Hi.”

He peeked out.

Maria didn’t approach.

Didn’t claim him.

Didn’t force affection.

She simply sat on the floor.

“You don’t remember me.”

Ethan watched her.

“That’s okay.”

Her voice broke.

“I remember you.”

Adrian turned away, overwhelmed.

Rachel placed a hand over her mouth.

Then Ethan noticed Oliver.

“Baby?”

Adrian smiled.

“Yes.”

“His name is Oliver.”

Ethan moved closer.

Oliver reached toward him.

Ethan laughed.

The sound transformed the room.

For one moment there was no Wellington.

No Evelyn.

No Rourke.

Just two little boys meeting.

Brothers.

Adrian watched them and understood something Claire had known before he did.

Family could be biological.

Legal.

Chosen.

Carried.

Raised.

Protected.

But never owned.

Rachel would remain part of Ethan’s life.

Adrian had already decided that.

Whatever legal battles followed, he would not punish Ethan by tearing away the only mother he remembered.

Maria would have a place too.

Not as a secret.

Not as a servant.

As someone whose life had been permanently tied to Ethan’s.

But peace lasted less than twenty-four hours.

Detective Reed arrived carrying a sealed envelope.

“Rourke talked.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“About Claire’s sister?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He gave us a name.”

Reed placed a photograph on the table.

Dr. Eleanor Bennett.

Adrian stared.

“I don’t know her.”

Rachel did.

Her face went white.

“Ellie.”

“You know her?”

“She worked at Wellington.”

“Everyone worked at Wellington.”

Rachel ignored the remark.

“She was a pediatric geneticist.”

“Was she Claire’s sister?”

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Half-sister.”

Adrian stared.

“Claire never told me.”

“She may not have known until shortly before her death.”

Reed opened the file.

Claire’s mother had given birth to Eleanor years before Claire.

The adoption was sealed.

They reconnected only months before Claire died.

“Where is she?”

Reed looked at Adrian.

“That’s the problem.”

“What?”

“She’s been near you.”

He displayed security images.

Eleanor outside Oliver’s pediatric clinic.

Eleanor at a grocery store near Maria.

Eleanor across the street from the mansion.

Adrian’s anger rose.

“She’s stalking my son.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Maybe she’s protecting him.”

“Everyone who says they’re protecting my children seems to lie to me.”

Fair point.

Then Reed placed another image down.

Eleanor speaking with Claire.

Timestamp:

Six days before Claire died.

Adrian stared at his wife.

Alive.

Talking to a sister he never knew existed.

“Find her.”

“We already did.”

Adrian looked up.

“She contacted me this morning.”

“Where?”

“She wants to meet you.”

“No.”

Everyone turned toward Maria.

She stared at Eleanor’s photograph.

“No more secret meetings.”

Adrian nodded.

“She comes here.”

Reed agreed.

That evening, Eleanor Bennett entered the mansion.

Forty-two.

Dark blonde hair.

Claire’s eyes.

Adrian almost stopped breathing.

The resemblance wasn’t exact.

But enough.

Eleanor looked toward Oliver.

Then Ethan.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

“Both of them.”

Adrian stepped between her and the children.

“You don’t go near them until you explain everything.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Fair.”

“Why did Claire never tell me about you?”

“She found me six weeks before she died.”

“Why?”

“Black Harbor.”

Eleanor sat.

“My adoptive father was one of Wellington’s first investors.”

Adrian frowned.

“Who?”

“David Rourke.”

Silence.

“You’re Rourke’s adopted daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Then why help Claire?”

“Because I discovered what he was.”

Eleanor removed a folder.

Inside were photographs of children.

Dozens.

“Black Harbor didn’t end when Richard Cole withdrew funding.”

“We know.”

“No.”

She looked at Adrian.

“You know the fertility program continued.”

“What don’t I know?”

“They expanded.”

“Into what?”

“Adoption.”

Rachel sat slowly.

Eleanor continued.

“Children created through unauthorized procedures were placed with families connected to Black Harbor.”

Adrian felt sick.

“Why?”

“Money. Leverage. Sometimes research.”

“Research?”

“Long-term genetic tracking.”

Maria whispered:

“They followed the children?”

“Yes.”

“For years?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked toward Ethan and Oliver.

“That’s why Trent photographed them.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Rourke was rebuilding the network.”

“Why?”

“Because genetic data became more valuable than the procedures themselves.”

Reed frowned.

“What kind of data?”

“Medical predispositions. Family relationships. Private health information. Information wealthy people would pay to hide—or pay to obtain.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“And Claire found this.”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

“She copied everything.”

“Black Harbor.”

“That was only part of it.”

Adrian stared.

“What else?”

“A master archive.”

“Where?”

Eleanor looked toward Oliver.

“Claire hid the access key with her children.”

Adrian froze.

“Children?”

“Three keys.”

“Ethan had one.”

“Yes.”

“Oliver?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Where?”

“In his original hospital identification tag.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“And the third?”

Eleanor said nothing.

Adrian leaned forward.

“Rourke said there were three living children Claire was protecting.”

“Yes.”

“Who is the third?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“I promised Claire I wouldn’t tell you unless Rourke was arrested.”

“He is.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

Eleanor looked toward Maria.

“I’m sorry.”

Maria’s face changed.

“For what?”

“The miscarriage.”

Maria went still.

“You know about that.”

“Yes.”

“You know Ethan survived.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor swallowed.

“But Ethan wasn’t the baby Maria carried.”

The room went silent.

Adrian stared.

“What?”

Rachel stood.

“That’s impossible.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“Mercer lied even after Vale exposed part of the truth.”

Maria’s breathing became shallow.

“Then who did I carry?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“A girl.”

Maria’s knees weakened.

Adrian caught her.

“No.”

Eleanor’s tears fell.

“You carried Adrian and Claire’s first embryo.”

Maria stared.

“A daughter?”

“Yes.”

“But Ethan…”

“Ethan was carried by another surrogate.”

Adrian felt dizzy.

“Who?”

“A woman enrolled under the confidential patient number WRC-7714.”

Adrian remembered the ultrasound.

The wrong patient identification number.

It had never belonged to Maria.

It belonged to Ethan’s surrogate.

“Then Maria’s pregnancy…”

“Was real.”

Eleanor nodded.

“And she did not miscarry.”

Maria began sobbing.

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“Where is my daughter?”

Eleanor looked toward the floor.

“Claire found her.”

“When?”

“Six weeks before she died.”

“WHERE?”

“Living with an adoptive family.”

“Why didn’t she bring her home?”

“For the same reason she hid Ethan.”

“Rourke.”

“Yes.”

Adrian struggled to breathe.

“How old is she?”

“Two.”

“Name?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“Grace.”

Maria covered her mouth.

“Grace.”

Adrian repeated the name.

“Grace what?”

Before Eleanor could answer, the mansion alarms screamed.

Reed stood.

“What happened?”

A security officer called through his radio.

“Detective, we have a breach at the east gate.”

“Who?”

“No vehicle.”

“Then what triggered it?”

A pause.

“Someone left something.”

Reed ordered the gates secured.

Minutes later, an officer brought a package into the foyer.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Same brown paper.

Same handwriting.

He opened it.

Inside was a red child’s shoe.

Tiny.

Maria began crying.

Eleanor went white.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You recognize it?”

She nodded.

“Grace was wearing those the last time I saw her.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

A phone inside the package began ringing.

Reed put it on speaker.

Adrian answered.

“Where is my daughter?”

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

“You finally know about her.”

Adrian frowned.

Not Rourke.

Not Evelyn.

Not Vanessa.

“Who are you?”

The woman laughed softly.

Eleanor backed away.

She recognized the voice.

Adrian saw it.

“Eleanor?”

Her lips trembled.

“No…”

The woman continued.

“David Rourke was never Black Harbor.”

Reed stared at the phone.

“He was only the banker.”

Adrian’s blood chilled.

“Then who are you?”

The answer came quietly.

“My name is Dr. Katherine Vale.”

Maria froze.

Thomas Vale’s wife.

The woman everyone believed had died twenty-five years ago.

Katherine continued.

“And Grace is with me.”

Adrian’s fist tightened.

“If you hurt her—”

“Why would I hurt her?”

“You kidnapped her.”

“No, Adrian.”

Her voice became almost gentle.

“I’ve raised her since the day she was born.”

Maria made a broken sound.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Another child.

Another stolen life.

“Bring her back.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Rourke’s arrest changed nothing.”

Adrian looked toward Reed.

“What do you want?”

“The three keys Claire created.”

“Why?”

“Because if you open the master archive, you won’t just expose Wellington.”

A pause.

“You’ll expose hundreds of families.”

“That sounds like your problem.”

“No.”

Katherine’s voice hardened.

“It becomes Grace’s problem when the world discovers what was done to her.”

Adrian stared.

“What was done to her?”

Silence.

Then Katherine said:

“Ask Eleanor why Grace was the only embryo in Black Harbor labeled PROJECT EVE.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Adrian turned toward her.

“What is Project Eve?”

Eleanor began crying.

“Katherine, don’t.”

“Tell him.”

“Please.”

“TELL HIM.”

Adrian’s voice thundered through the room.

Eleanor looked at him.

“Claire’s embryo wasn’t simply transferred.”

Adrian felt dread crawl through him.

“What did they do?”

Eleanor could barely speak.

“They edited it.”

Silence.

Maria stared at her.

“Edited?”

“Genetically.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“Claire didn’t know when the embryo was created.”

“What did they change?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“WHAT DID THEY CHANGE?”

Eleanor’s tears fell.

“A gene associated with Claire’s inherited cardiac condition.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Claire had spent years terrified that a biological child might inherit the heart disorder that had complicated her own medical history.

“You’re saying…”

“They tried to remove the mutation.”

Maria whispered:

“Did it work?”

Eleanor looked at the red shoe.

“We don’t know.”

Adrian turned back to the phone.

“Katherine.”

No answer.

“Katherine!”

The call had ended.

Then Adrian’s phone received a photograph.

A little girl sat on a porch overlooking a lake.

Dark curls.

Gray-blue eyes.

Claire’s smile.

She held a stuffed rabbit.

Adrian’s knees nearly gave out.

His daughter.

Grace.

Alive.

Beneath the photograph were coordinates.

And one message:

COME TOMORROW AT SUNSET.

A second message arrived.

BRING ETHAN’S KEY.

Then a third.

BRING OLIVER’S KEY.

And finally:

COME ALONE IF YOU EVER WANT TO HEAR YOUR DAUGHTER CALL YOU DADDY.

Adrian stared at Grace’s photograph.

Behind him, Ethan laughed with Oliver.

Two sons he had almost lost.

Somewhere beyond the dark coastline waited the daughter he had never known existed.

And for the first time, Adrian understood Claire’s real plan.

She hadn’t scattered the truth because she wanted him to chase secrets forever.

She had divided it among her children because no single person could unlock Black Harbor without bringing the family back together.

Adrian closed his fist around Ethan’s tiny hospital bracelet.

Then he looked at Oliver.

At Maria.

At Rachel.

At Eleanor.

At Detective Reed.

“No more trades.”

Reed studied him.

“What are you thinking?”

Adrian looked again at the photograph of Grace.

For eighteen months, other people had decided what truths he could handle.

What children he could know.

What losses he should accept.

That ended now.

“We’re going to get my daughter.”

Eleanor stood.

“Katherine will be expecting you.”

“Good.”

“She built Black Harbor with Mercer. She knows every trick Evelyn knew and more.”

“Good.”

“She may have people inside law enforcement.”

Reed’s expression changed.

Adrian looked at him.

“Then we don’t tell law enforcement.”

Reed understood.

Maria stepped closer.

“What about Ethan and Oliver?”

Adrian looked at his sons.

“They stay somewhere nobody connected to Wellington knows exists.”

Rachel nodded.

“I know a place.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“Can you protect them?”

Rachel looked at Ethan.

Then Oliver.

“With my life.”

Adrian nodded.

He looked down at Grace’s photograph one final time.

“Then tomorrow…”

His eyes hardened.

“…we finish what Claire started.”

Far away, inside a quiet lake house, two-year-old Grace Cole sat beside a window.

A woman approached behind her.

Katherine Vale.

Grace looked up.

“Mommy?”

Katherine froze.

For the first time, guilt crossed her face.

Then Grace pointed toward the photograph Katherine had placed on the table.

It showed Adrian holding Oliver.

The little girl touched Adrian’s face.

“Who?”

Katherine stared at her.

She could have lied.

She had lied for two years.

But this time she didn’t.

“That…”

Her voice cracked.

“…is your father.”

Grace smiled.

“Daddy?”

Katherine closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Then a man stepped from the darkness behind them.

Katherine turned.

Her face went pale.

“You’re not supposed to be here.”

The man smiled.

Grace stared curiously at him.

Katherine moved between them.

“How did you find us?”

The man placed a gun on the table.

“You really thought Claire only made copies for Adrian?”

Katherine’s breathing stopped.

“Who are you working for?”

The man smiled.

Then he placed a black folder beside Grace’s photograph.

Across the front were two words:

PROJECT EVE.

He opened it.

Katherine looked at the first page.

And whatever she saw drained every trace of color from her face.

“No.”

The man smiled.

“You didn’t cure Claire’s mutation.”

Katherine stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

“You created something else.”

Grace continued playing with her stuffed rabbit, unaware of the terror unfolding three feet away.

Katherine whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

The man leaned closer.

“The test results came back this morning.”

He tapped the file.

“And when Adrian finds out what Grace’s DNA actually contains…”

His smile disappeared.

May you like

“…Black Harbor won’t be the secret you need to worry about anymore.”
