Mara was arrested four days after DNA results.
Not in another country.
At a motel eighty miles away.
She had used her own debit card.
Charges initially:
Child endangerment.
Interference with child-welfare investigation.
Unlawful confinement? Sophie could move within cavity but not leave. Evidence suggested Mara told her she could not come out and physically blocked access. Prosecutors reviewed.
Potential attempted extortion based on notes?
No communication had reached us.
Thoughts are not completed extortion.
No charge for that initially.
Mara told police through counsel:
“I was protecting Sophie.”
From whom?
“The clinic.”
How would the clinic harm her?

Then:
“The Carters would take her.”
Did she believe that?

Then why photograph us?
“I needed to know what kind of people they were.”
Why notes about private payment?
No answer.
Why hide Sophie during CPS visit?
“They were going to remove her.”
Why was CPS visiting?
School absence.
Why no school?
“Sophie was emotionally unstable after Caroline died.”

Mara received approximately:

for Sophie after Caroline’s death.

Rent.
Food.

Clothing.

in cash withdrawals over nine months with unclear purpose.
Not enough to define motive.
Then clinic claim.
Mara had demanded:

in pre-suit settlement from Asteron.
Her lawyer had said likely claim value could be substantial but required court protection for Sophie.
Mara wanted:
$1.2 million directly for “guardian damages and relocation.”

Then she moved beside us.
Her final plan looked less like sophisticated extortion and more like escalating desperation:
Control Sophie.
